Hey, the tautology store called, and they confirmed they were a store that sold tautologies

still can’t believe the pro-“marketplace of ideas!” grifters keep trying to deploy “social contagion!” as a negative. in what universe are those terms not both lousy descriptions of the exact same mechanism

The more interesting take - and the harder piece to do right - is not "Wow congestion pricing is so successful so quickly" but rather "why did so many think or want congestion pricing to fail? And why did so many other people listen to them for so long?"

In college a professor quoted a farmed saying you shouldn't have to be a superhero to do the right thing and it's been my North star for how a society should function for awhile

Was at a conference dinner a while back and one guy said "The future is AI. It doesn't replace senior developers, but no more need for juniors." To which i replied: "Where do you think senior developers come from. Straight from the womb?" He went quiet, then wandered off to a different huddle.

It’s weird to live in a time when basic principles like cruelty is wrong, cheating is empty & the idea that curiosity, generosity, originality, the satisfaction of earned accomplishments & loving intimacy are the center of a good life feel like countercultural concepts

Our local store is already closing (longstanding building/landlord issues.) A new one whose opening was announced now likely isn’t. Luckily it’s MA so we just have to go another mile or so, but having to drive and pay double will suck, and this was all completely avoidable and unnecessary.

Buddy Guy has been "Who is that man? He's incredible" my entire life. At least once a decade, he surges into wider recognition, then becomes sort of invisible--except to dedicated enthusiasts.

The combination of "May the Fourth be with You" posts and posts memorializing May 4, 1970 at Kent State seem the perfect contradiction for a collapsing empire still trying to pretend that it is a plucky rebellion.

It is not unfrequent to hear men declaim loudly upon liberty, who, if we may judge by the whole tenor of their actions, mean nothing else by it but their own liberty, — to oppress without control or the restraint of laws all who are poorer or weaker than themselves. Samuel Adams

the amazing hubris of people who grew extremely wealthy and successful because of the stability that these systems provided then deciding that they probably didn’t do anything that important because wealthy and successful people never even saw them do anything is a v shitty way for us all to die

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Pope Robert Ford

Americans succeeded at creating a social material environment of (relative) safety but failed to produce a learning environment that would successfully communicate the reasons to maintain an environment of safety after the normal harms of the world passed out of common memory

a major issue with video games is that they produce a bunch of people who consider themselves brain geniuses for solving problems that were designed to be solvable. as a remedy, we should be making more games that are actively and irreconcilably hostile to the player. thank you

Bring back *everyone* who was sent from the U.S. to CECOT in El Salvador. *No one* should be sent there. ALL their rights were violated. ALL of them should come home.

2014 everybody

Going to keep saying: a society that wants to keep its basic functioning has to discourage lying. rewarding it instead is suicidal

You can’t be a transphobe and an anti-fascist. If your human rights are not for everyone, you are passively or actively collaborating with fascism.

All protests are different in their own way but at the heart of them they are all usually pretty simple: It doesn't have to be this way. I refuse to let it be this way. We refuse to let it be this way. www.welcometohellworld.com/which-side-a...

never seen it put more concisely than this. one sentence. completely correct.

"It was almost as if American upper management, regardless of religion or politics, instinctively understood that maintaining the right of an ethnocratic settler-colonial outpost to exterminate an unruly subject population was essential to its own survival."

this quote from hunter s. thompson is 24 years old

This is me telling you that you owe it to Val Kilmer to introduce someone to "Top Secret!" for the first time

Just so everybody understands, Booker has been speaking cogently about the issues the entire time and Strom Thurmond famously spent hours reading from the encyclopedia, because segregationists were and are dumbshits

Rot in hell, Strom Thurmond

Speaking of Bob, test your ability to distinguish Dylan lyrics from Death Grips lyrics: youtu.be/SMuPAPli0aI

‘Why aren’t people in the streets’ *stares in the tune of people showing up on a few hours notice all over the country to protest state kidnappings*

it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

I am increasingly coming to the view that the primary sociopolitical problem in America is a (deliberately created) illiteracy crisis, of which fascism is an epiphenomenon.

IT’S ALWAYS FAILED RECONSTRUCTION

If the lesson you take from this current moment is that there is some "return to normal" that you think will happen, I think that you're going to be very disappointed. If you question whether what you were previously living under was ever *normal,* then you're on the right track.

we believe we are special and we simply are not

Nothing says "run the country like a business" quite like dismantling your accounts receivable department.

There’s one group that single-handedly has the power to prevent the destruction of US science & long-term competitiveness. But they’re very unlikely to do it. The heads of R1/R2 research universities could jointly threaten to pull out of March Madness unless federal research funding is restored.

serious answer: the sabotage of reconstruction

In retrospect we should have reacted much more strongly to people being like “you’re just virtue signaling, you’re just saying you have virtue, you’re just treating virtue like it’s a good thing for an adult human being to have, you just want to run around everywhere having morality and being good”

Defend the liberty of a stranger as you would defend your own, or that of a loved one, because that is what's actually on the table—whether we are a society that will sit still as our neighbors are snatched in the night, and disappeared into darkness, or a society that will fight for each other.
