it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

I have no idea what to even do about this. I had Chinese friends in graduate school who would duck their heads and whisper if they ever said something critical of our government (or theirs). I always told them they didn't have to do that in America...I was wrong. I feel sick.
In fairness (????!!!!????) they practiced disappearing students in 2020 as well as disappearing people in distressed areas to black sites in Chicago... forever. I'm glad people seem to care this time;; I hope that matters.
portland has entered the chat.
& now the rose city has a willing latin american strongman in the district attorney's office to coordinate the human trafficking locally.
I suggest that college newspapers be deluged with editorials deploring students who walk on the grass. Soon that is the kind of topic we will be limited to.
No like it’s been years of conservatives whining about being canceled because they got uninvited from a speaking gig for being racist, and now we’re here
Yep! It was a normal occurrence in Spain during the "reign" of the Generalisimo Franco and his private "secret service". I wonder what happens to those pardons after January 2020.
OBVIOUSLY that’s because white nationalists speaking on college campuses around POC isn’t a national security issue the way that *checks notes* brown people having signs is
Could I get one day when I don’t think of the guy I talked to when canvassing who said he was supporting Trump because of “free speech”? Just one damn day?!
The malice can be explained by downsizings and cuttings across govt. Defund, shut down, and divert as much government funding to their private control. Techbro fascism is his new venture. Musk, Vance, and the Yarvin enthusiasts they’ve placed into positions have big plans
I think the deep reality is that campuses got much more diverse, and the quality of discussion went way up, and a bunch of dudes who were legacy admissions got mad that they couldn't hang anymore.
I was a double in philosophy and opera so by no means do I dislike the classics. That said, there is definitely a contingent of guys in those fields angry that no one thinks their mere regurgitation of the classics is impressive anymore
I don’t think it’s that at all. I think that the small minority of right-wingers on campus for the last 15 years got radicalized on 4chan and then their guy got elected and empowered them to violate people’s rights.
I think legacy-admissions types (who only exist at a handful of schools including Ivies) are not usually the kind of people to become basement-dwelling 4chan idiots. They might generally lean right of average, but a lot of them just want to fit in and not be thought of as “legacy admissions.”
Tbf, free thinkers like Bari Weiss have always said that students shouting down right-wing speakers is an attack on free speech *unless* the speaker is a visa/free card holder
I’m sure it’s just a coincidence and these writers are cracking their knuckles in preparation of the spirited defenses of these students they’re surely about to publish
Fucking Jeffrey Goldberg turning The Atlantic into the Jesse Singal/ Conor Friedersdorf /Jon Haidt campus cancel culture bleat beat, while marching us straight to all this.
That was always the point.

You're absolutely correct but also we all know that shit was never in good faith. The agenda is "the law protects but does not bind us, the law binds but does not protect you" and it always was and we all knew that the whole time. Fascists don't care about being hypocrites. To them it's a flex.
They've already deported a nephrologist despite a judge's order, good thing there's no kidney disease in the US

These guys don’t want that. They want an uneducated populace working in factories and on farms while women stay home raising kids. They think we won’t lose anything from it. They will be surprised.
I’m sure @nafsa-official.bsky.social will have a lot to say about this! School advisors need guidance! We need to rein in this administration. This is insanity!

Don’t you dare cancel events for safety concerns because Nazis aren’t welcome. FREE SPEECH.
No, not like that!
Canceled! A girl with blue hair told me to shut up. Where’s my freedom of speech? This is the same thing right?”
