A social platform does not by design need to allow its users to privately share images in DMs. That's something that came many years after Twitter's initial launch and now is seen as a necessity by users who didn't join until after its incorporation.

People seem to forget that the features they take for granted on other platforms were not always there. They took time to be incorporated.

The server space point isn't something I'd considered. But honestly, if having images in DMs here means ads, then I'd rather it never be a feature here. There are plenty of other ways to share images privately. Bluesky does not and should not be an all-in-one social platform imo.

I would have included Instagram - which launched in 2010 and also didn't have images in DMs (or DMs at all) until December of 2013 - likely to directly compete with Twitter doing the same.
But that is literally an image-hosting platform. Of course, it's going to support that function.
