Only the finest management and HR talent can end up spending $1.1 million on lawyers (just their own!) for an issue with a temporary employee who had two days left on her contract. In awe of the skills.

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

Speechless but not surprised. When dictators vote in unison: "US votes against UN resolution demanding Russia withdraw its forces from Ukraine". apnews.com/article/un-r...

Me, talking about Chinese warships off Australia to the UNSW Canberra newsroom- www.unsw.edu.au/newsroom/new...

NATO can't protect Europe from Russia because the US has defected. The EU can't because UK is no longer a member. The UN can't because of Russia & US. We need a body with Europe + UK but not Russia + US, with existing admin infrastructure. What I'm saying is: arm the Eurovision Song Contest.

This is appalling, but sadly the tip of the iceberg. This is happening across the sector and more duplicitous senior managers at other institutions have cut far more and far harder but over a longer period to suppress media coverage. What are 30 jobs here and 50 jobs there? It is 750 jobs over 5 yrs

It’s me, moonlighting on another podcast (podlighting?) talking about my favourite case: the Mauritius/UK dispute over the Chagos archipelago. Decolonisation, the Cold War, US airbases - it’s got it all! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/c...

Academic selfie: late summer

This week on #CalledToTheBar we examine AUKUS, the trilateral security partnership between Australia, the UK, and and US, and ask: what are the international law issues and implications? Featuring Rob McLaughlin, Natalia Jevglevskaja and @moniquecormier.bsky.social soundcloud.com/calledtotheb...

Academic selfie: cravat! Catching up with @pagingdrpaige.bsky.social who, as usual, took the better picture of us both.

Trump's lawyers are absolutely flailing in the courts right now

Possible that what we're seeing now is what happens when conspiracy theorists who think the world is run by a conclave of the most powerful nations stitching up secret deals behind closed doors - are actually the ones in power.

My office window view is not a normal one… CDF parade practice.

Academic selfie: lunch with @djag2.bsky.social (and Rob McLaughlin and Dom Dalla-Pozza but they left before the selfie) in the time of global decline edition

Time to lean into the coward's editorial gambit, rather than cut the chapter down to half its length - call it two chapters, or better, three!

Ever wondered what’s up in the Chagos Archipelago? We were curious, so we asked @djag2.bsky.social to explain it all - on Case in Point podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/c...

Gang - If you're hypermobile (that means you, neurodivergents), consider having a crack at 'clinical pilates'. This is the pilates where they work out exactly where your muscles are firing in a suboptimal way and teach them how to work more better. It's $$$, but the effectiveness is super high.

Douglas, why have you taken to wearing cravats in summer? Well, to paraphrase:

Academic selfie: a bit cooler day, so I wore this favourite outfit again

“I’m a bit sick of people telling me, ‘Stop talking about #racism, because you’re disrupting the social cohesion’.” Race Discrim Commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman says using "social cohesion" is an excuse to avoid difficult conversations on structural racism. 🎯 www.theguardian.com/media/2025/f...

Jesus was, of course, famous for turning people away and was notably a big supporter of draconian law and order policies like crucifixion.

What does Jesus think about people who lie about what's in the Bible?

Something I’ve been working on in my hobby time this year: “Academia: the board game”. You play until one player is promoted to emeritus, or all players burn out and leave academia. Or you can see who survives 4 terms (sorry, ‘productivity cycles’) and tally victory points on your career plan.

Trump officials fired nuclear staff not realizing they oversee the country’s weapons stockpile, sources say www.cnn.com/2025/02/14/c...

Academic selfie in green (or as @zoerose.bsky.social sauf to me: “give my regards to the Shire”).

War criminal to meet convicted felon at summit hosted by man who murders journalists

I've been noodling a lot lately on academic freedom and the ability of faculty members to speak as individual faculty members I get the impression that many are self-muzzling due for self-preservation purposes This is a quick 🧵 on speaking out as an academic faculty member 1/

This issue bubbled up about a week ago and then sank without trace. Glad to see it addressed by #CalledToTheBar.

Academic selfie: the summer cravat era continues

Ep. 29 of #CalledToTheBar is live! What do we make of the ICJ judicial plagiarism controversy? What does it tell us about the judicial role and judicial ethics? @drnajimagi.bsky.social unpacks the issues with @mikebecker.bsky.social and @kyrawigard.bsky.social soundcloud.com/calledtotheb...

Since the 90s governments have pushed universities to run more like big business. This led to high executive pay, dissatisfied 'customers', mutinous staff, disbanding socially useful but 'unprofitable' divisions, and lavish spending on white elephant prestige projects. So, in fairness, it worked.

Academic selfie: warm weather casual

A friend WhatsApped to ask me for advice on getting their first bespoke suit. I amy have replied with over a dozen messages, some running to email length. I regret nothing.
