A grassroots movement is calling on all Americans to abstain from shopping with major retailers tomorrow, February 28, as part of an “economic blackout.” I encourage you to join. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/boycott

Here's @oliverdarcy.bsky.social describing how the big national newsrooms characterized Kash Patel as they reported on his appointment. www.status.news/p/cbs-evenin... "Conspiracy theorist" and "Trump loyalist" are both factually correct. So it becomes a question, not of accuracy, but of truth.

I love leaving voice mails for my senators where I say things like "the USPS is very important to our country" as if I'm helping a small child with a book report or describing our civilization to an alien

Also would note responsibility for this goes to the U.S. Supreme Court and the North Carolina Supreme Court - for greenlighting gerrymandering. The three extra seats that Rs picked up in NC after a fair 7R-7D map was replaced with a gerrymandered 10R-4D map are, by themselves, the difference.

How many Federal workers were fired so $200M could be spent on this wankery?

This short video on the false promise of using AI for climate is brilliant. The speaker worked years at Microsoft and resigned over the AI's broken promise. It's only 5 minutes, but a high quality 5 minutes:

Entitled thief “Over the years, Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits” www.washingtonpost.com/technology/i...

The current proposals that AI companies should be uniquely excluded from paying for other people’s IP and creative labour is effectively a state subsidy worth trillions of dollars, paid for by content creators and copyright holders.

Incredible thread - full of practical info about the process that shows where we can stop these marauders. Please read, and keep on calling your reps (whom you can find at reps.fyi).

Every House Republican just voted to defund Medicaid. Reminder: there are no moderate Republicans in Congress, and stop pretending there are.

Just going to leave this here should it become useful to anyone…

When I entered class this evening, students were talking about the AP/WH fight over the Gulf of Mexico and said both sides were being "petty." I used this exact hypothetical (great minds!) and they realized the AP is not being petty. It's not about this fight, it's about the broader principle.

Good that the Times is tracking his deeds and words like this. www.nytimes.com/interactive/... Next level would be to organize all the known steps in democracy's replacement by authoritarian governance, and report it as news when he reaches them, so that we know where we are— and what remains.

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

An update - when I told the editor I was hoping to write something broadly accessible they decided to share the column with Texas sister papers! There is a lot of interest in hearing from scientists - reach out!

“From my perch here in the US—where I arrived decades ago, thinking that having grown up in a country that experienced fascism was never going to be relevant again—here are a couple of thoughts on what we might learn from the German election.”

So I did this today: banged out a couple hundred words of a pitch while managing lab, sent it to the opinion page editor at the newspaper my parents still somehow get in print, and got back a "yes" in, I absolutely kid you not, under 15 minutes

One of the repeated themes in Victor Klemperer's diaries of the early Nazi years is hearing from someone whose cousin works in the finance ministry that the regime can't possibly last another six weeks.

I've noted some of the procedural things Democrats could be doing in Congress, but this point from @edgeofsports.bsky.social's great piece in the Nation deserves emphasis. This is basic politics, and it's baffling that every Democrat isn't doing it every day. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

Trickle-down economics was never about helping the average American; it has always been about enriching the few. It's time to call it what it is: an upward siphoning of wealth from the 95% to the top 5%.

Absolutely. Call the reps you have, whether they're Ds or Rs. You can be incredibly powerful when you call YOUR OWN reps. PARTICULARLY very LOCAL reps. They don't get that many calls! You can make a big difference!

Can confirm. Therapists and investment advisors are going to need therapy.

This is another huge norm broken within DOJ. Typically, a long-time senior career official -- who knows and cares about the institution and has DOJ's integrity as a guidepost -- would hold this role within the office of the Deputy Attorney General.

I mean, mustache-twirling level

If Joe Biden said this, the entire Republican Party would be yelling about Munich/1938/appeasement, & it would prompt nonstop front page headlines about whether he was mentally unfit to be president.

I'm just saying: Adams is the worst and has been for a long time. If you're a New Yorker, call Hochul and tell her he has to go. This is the closest she's signaled to actually doing it: let's push her over the top. 1-518-474-8390
