It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Here's how to appreciate teachers: pay them better.

#WithoutNSF I would not have received my first research grant as a new faculty member. #NSF funds also supported me during graduate school and contributed to the discovery of the top quark (the last one to be discovered).

Thinking about devastating cuts to NSF: US gov-funded science has been the engine upon which most of the tech wealth was generated. But the oligarchs (currently hoarding much of that $) think it’s their own brilliance & not the accident of standing close to the scientific engine that made them rich.

I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Mood

Just deranged. This was a *solved* problem.

Is this just our new normal? Women being arrested if a cop doesn’t like how they miscarried, and lawmakers debating whether to put us to death before breaking for fucking lunch? Has everyone lost their minds?

Fucking bullshit. My public dollars shouldn't be paying for religious indoctrination.

I'm concered that so many people answered "Don't believe this happened" to objective facts. (Or that it is even a survey option about something that is actually happening).

Reminder that a study on lizard saliva eventually led to the development of Ozempic so be real wary of the criticism of studies and funding that sounds non-sensical when presented with no context.

excited for this filter to start axing random electrochemistry projects, e.g. "applied cathodic BIASES reduce activation BARRIERS towards electrochemical reduction" www.nature.com/articles/s41... #chemsky ⚗️🧪🔌💡

Somewhere out there in this stupid universe, a geologist is regretting their decision to apply for NSF grants to study inclusions.

If you aren't bothered by this, you should be

“Since 1980, Congress has mandated that the agency seek to broaden participation of underrepresented groups […] The NSF spokesperson did not respond to a query about concerns that Trump’s executive orders are at odds with the agency’s responsibilities, as codified in law.”

This is how fascism operates. In the 1930s the Nazi regime enforced strict control over academic institutions, censoring research and silencing dissenting voices. Many left Germany: Einstein, Born, Hahn, Meitner, Schrödinger, Szilard etc. etc. Today, US scientists are looking at moving abroad.

in addition to musk stealing the data for his own purposes, I imagine that they think they can simply shut off payments to whoever doesn’t comply. I would not be shocked if they tried to turn off Social Security for an entire state of course that’s dissolution of the union territory.

That NSF is combing through grants for keywords like gender, equity, scientific literacy, etc, in order to cancel those grants, is frustrating when you consider that Broader Impacts ARE A REQUIREMENT OF GETTING THE GRANT. In case you're not familiar, here are examples 🧪 new.nsf.gov/funding/lear...

Something else lost in all the chaotic noise. The NTSB will only be updating information about the recent plane/helicoptor crash through it's account on X/Twitter. A private company is controlling formal information from the government. www.theverge.com/news/604740/...

This is a national emergency:

Everything is made from something. If you are curious about those somethings. Check out our new updated digital materials library. Its a beauty. Materials Library search.app/yvGNFjLBsRSD...

Mask bans are evil and dystopian and I am appalled that they’re even being proposed. Wearing masks to protect your health and the health of others needs to be recognized as a right for all and an absolutely essential protection for those who would otherwise be unable to participate in society

wanna fight?

A rare case in which a single passenger’s mask ends up protecting the entire plane

"so what do you do for work" "uhh I mostly like pushing and lifting things"

After so many years, I still have to look up "independent and dependent variable" to be sure I'm not switching them around

My goofiest trait is that I will always eat the garnishes at restaurants. Why is my food in a bed of lettuce if I'm not supposed to eat the lettuce...

Sad that a lot of my school's materials science stuff seems focused around mechanical engineering... I'm a chem and physics major and I feel like it's difficult for me to try and get my foot in my dream field without fully switching majors (I love ME too but I have too many credits in chem already)

The person who invites you to Bluesky is the closest thing we have to vampire sires.

I think the "I am a woman in stem! Bunsen burner: ON! I'm in my element when I study the elements and I do it with gusto" video had almost as much influence on me becoming a chem major as the various chem/materials science passions I've had throughout my life

If I post for the first time tonight and never again I can tell people that I literally post once in a blue moon!! (Picture from my backyard! Also, hi Bluesky!)
