i know the posts from people who "voted for trump but didn't want this" specifically are going to drive me fully insane

📷 A monarch butterfly visits the flowers along the edge of Bubbly Creek on the South Branch of the Chicago River at Canal Origins Park. 📣 Learn how the #MWRD cleans #wastewater and manages #stormwater on our next virtual tour on Wednesday, March 12, from 2-3:15 p.m. ⬇️ mwrd.org/education/to...

i think it's important that people understand what USAID did, because too many (and not just one partisan group) were just flat-out wrong about the agency's mission and why it mattered.

Popping in for a couple of minutes to share that people are in motion everywhere. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/u...

Fine. I'll try to get into fútbol. Is Mexico a good team to root for? How's Bosnia? Who are the Yankees of soccer?

‘Grandpa doesn’t remember saying the thing we all heard him say last week’ is pretty relatable but not in a good way

“We’re all sitting here trying to filter through the noise to the economic reality,” said KPMG chief economist Diane Swonk. “But the noise itself has its own economic consequences.” 🇺🇸 @wsj.com www.wsj.com/economy/trum...

Rewatched this again and I just can't for the life of me figure out how someone could say that Zelensky was "melting down." Also they were very obviously trying to get him to join in on a Biden-bashing session and got frustrated when it didn't go that way. www.washingtonpost.com/video/politi...

Guy who owes his entire career and vast wealth to Keynesian economics voice: I hate Keynesian economics

I actually think it will be very doable to recover quickly to America's former leading role in the world post-Trump, it will just require doing a lot of things that centrists and billionaires who'd prefer to return to the dysfunctional Obama-era status quo will find unpleasant or objectionable.

We traded every other traditional great power that isn’t Russia or China for a racist gas station that likes China more than us anyway. Much Realism. Very Wow.

watch the film

as recent as this time period is, it’s been forgotten. Mainstream America was all for the second (and first) Iraq War.

It bears noting that those medieval life expectancies aren't because people were regularly dropping dead in their mid-30s (tho overall mortality was definitely higher), it was because infant and childhood mortality was 30-40%! Incredible survivorship bias in how some people think about these things

So it turns out I have a bunch of these stickers that I ordered based on a block print I made the last time this schlemiel was president. I honestly don't remember what my plan was for these, but if you want me to send you one, just DM me. I must have about 50. They're 3" x 5".

i think a major problem along elites and pseudo intellectuals is the degree to which even liberal people have tacitly accepted IQ as real science and don’t treat anyone who bases their arguments on IQ being real science as having self-discredited.

This article is brutal. just a full force demantling of federal science support across the board, and destruction of the ability to even measure climate change much less reduce it. (gift link)

reskeet with a tweet you still think about

"gamergate was the start of the reactionary takeover of the GOP" -- false, doesn't consider linearity of time, lame "gamergate was an important training ground for a particular type of reactionary online coordination and harassment that was thereafter exploited by the GOP" -- true, cool, smart

Cuomo was governor for 10 years. He came in with a lot of experience and amassed a lot of political power. West coast states were trying hard to increase urban housing supply; he did nothing. He hounded out the best NYC Transit head we’ve ever had. He failed over and over to deliver on policy.

realheads remember he was like this at the beginning of the bush administration too

Today on Pitchfork, a good @matthewschnipper.bsky.social review of an album that blew my tiny mind in...1983? No later than 1984; it was one of the first punk records I heard, and it's still great. pitchfork.com/reviews/albu...

I believe Musk and DOGE disbanded 18F because we stood in the way of their "procurement capture" operation. We get the government *out* of wasteful contracts. Musk wants that money back for himself. Explanation by @anildash.com of procurement capture: www.anildash.com/2025/01/04/D...

climate hawks (laudatory)

Flu shots provide "cumulative immunity" year over year, which means that even if they only cancel one year of flu shots, we will continue to be sicker even when the shots return. Absolutely senseless death and disease. The people canceling this are mass murderers and should be treated accordingly.

These grants survived intense scientific competition and scrutiny by expert peer scientists. It’s a sham to suggest they are unworthy. Pure bigotry to revoke them.

I once saved an agency around $2 million on a modernization project because of a bad contract they had, it took me several phone calls and less than a week. You need alignment and air cover to pull stuff like this off, but the game changing is stuff we weren't even allowed to promote or talk about

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Yea we know

Caucus with the Democrats or it’s all just talk

image previews didn't load in the embedded post, but take a look at these beauties from NarodniyDimUkraina on Etsy:

"downsizes" is a weak way of saying "forced to cancel dozens of programs, which jeopardizes future STEM careers of talented undergrads" @science.org www.science.org/content/arti...

I have covered presidential politics for 40 years. This was the most juvenile display by a President and Vice President I have ever seen. Other presidents treated their enemies with more respect. This is a low point and a dark day for the US. Totally embarrassing.

Francis Collins, the NIH Director for 12 years, led the Human Genome Project and other NIH efforts for 32 years, resigned today. Key words from his resignation letter www.nytimes.com/2025/03/01/u...

I went to the tesla protest for a thing I'm working on and I talked to several onlookers - not protesters - and asked them what they knew about Elon and Doge and I'm telling you people don't know

Revealed preference of low info voters in rich democracies is a like fake populism I think, in that they like promises to blow up the system while it keeps trundling along providing prosperity and nothing too destabilizing happens

What we’re experiencing isn’t mass derangement, it’s a crisis of American elites. American elites have become unwilling to make or defend basic factual assertions if they collide with political narratives spread by far-right forces, especially online.
