The Lies of Locke Lamora (though Gentlemen Bastards will never be finished) is what I read after Abercrombie back in the day and it was perfect.

Yes! I was going to suggest this. The retirement system was so unique I bought the game as a result, and I'm glad I did.

This never would've been a problem if we had just gone with "menacing earthworks." If you haven't read the full readout of that signage team, it's incredible.

I've only met four billionaires in person, but each time I left the conversation feeling the same. I felt gross for my role in further enabling them.

Yeah, there's definitely no silver bullet. I got laid off last year and applied to a couple hundred jobs and spoke with over 75 of my connections finding a role at the level I was targeting. The role I wound up getting hired into wasn't even posted. I imagine that happens a lot too.

Been hiring people for 15 years and I've not seen any piece of technology autoreject applicants unless they state they don't meet a basic qualification or other role requirement. The most common reasons people get quickly rejected are tenure, level mismatch, or someone got hired before review.

Hiring and the market does suck right now, though, so I feel you. Basically the only way to get hired feels like an internal referral right now.

Yeah, definitely a French stumbling block. Hard to solve a problem you refuse to admit exists.

Feel like Clive had a thing about dudes being silhouetted by blue light. Thought it was the Lord of Illusions.

New books with 80s fantasy aesthetic is my weakness. Too much time spent looking at D&D 2e art as a kid, I think.

Sorry, back to your companion from the first post. What sort of books do they find worthwhile? First person reports of incidents? Technical documentation? Refrigerator manuals?

I always felt it was because the books were very large. The amount of book was significant, so too must be the knowledge contained therein.

My dad is like this. I loved fantasy and science fiction books as a kid, and he'd always be like "you shouldnt spend your time with that drivel, you should read war and peace." Dad, I was 8. 😩

I still have my Kindle, but been buying physical books again. And movies. The whole licensing thing is so gross.
