I’m not normally one to share betting tips, but my two current frontrunners in the event of a Pope-off are: Cardinal Pizzaballa, who if he doesn’t pick Papa John as his papal name has frankly missed a trick. Cardinal Ambongo, who as he comes from the Congo, already has his own papal theme tune.

Makes perfect sense to me 🤷

I wrote about Musk and this bureaucratic coup as plainly as I could. There's reporting in here & the particulars are overwhelming but what's happening is so clear: He's not trying to run the federal govt like a software company He's trying to turn it into a political weapon. (gift link)

Thought-provoking indeed. Spoiler alert: "within an hour or two of getting up", say experts.

I was expecting this #peoplespop24 group to be a chore like the indie one, but it was surprisingly pleasant. Voting Fontaines DC, Jessica Pratt, Rianne Downey and MJ Lenderman. Who I've now finally heard! It made me laugh! If it was 1993 I'd be all over it!

And here's my favourite set of #peoplespop24 tracks, bar a few from the 'misc' category (Manu Chao WTF?). Anyway, easy votes to my own noms, Kelly Lee Owens (+1) and A.G. Cook, could-have-nom'ed (didn't need the votes) The Spark, and one new discovery, Mica Levi's "slob air". Vote with your feet!

Then Play Long update - and then the Chemical Brothers proclaimed let there be light: nobilliards.blogspot.com/2025/01/the-...

Somehow my MAIN nominee (Jamie XX/Robyn, giving me LIFE) ended up here instead of in dance, which dooms it even further (no one likes it as much as I do anyway). Most of the rest* is merely fine; well-deserved votes to Jade, Sabrina and Kylie. (*Amanda Palmer-soundalikes LDP are still fkn terrible)

Another #peoplespop24 playlist - the "global" one. Not as many *add to 2024 faves* as hoped, but well-deserved votes to Baiuca, Ganges, Sahra Halgan and - spousal obligation - Young Leoisia & Jacuś. ¡votar! codayn! głosować!

This #peoplespop24 instalment 😞 A slog through lots of wet leg/dry cleaning-like rubbish, the oldies (JAMC, Cure, the Kims) comparing favourably. That said, my votes went to Fontaines D.C., Bodega (sounds as 1984 or 2004 as it does 2024), cheeky Cheekface and (BBC Sound of 2026 tip) New Model Army.

Obscurities indeed - all new to me. My picks went to Jane Pankia (the only thing truly in my wheelhouse), Mokotron (the most exciting discovery), Arxx (catchy) and Dragonforce (catchy in a 'can't look away' way). #peoplespop24 - have a listen, have a vote!

Enjoyable section in #peoplespop24 but I'm voting along party lines: Mall Grab and Caribou (my own nominations), Charli/Lorde (whom I would have nominated had they needed me) and Annie (only slightly outside my noms list). Best new discovery: Javiera Mena. Vote vote vote!

Despite all of the challenges - legal and meteorological - we did it! After 40 years of damaging deregulation, Greater Manchester has this morning successfully retaken control of the whole its bus network. 🙌🏻
