“But where says some is the King of America?…in America THE LAW IS THE KING.” Thomas Paine, COMMON SENSE (1776)

Been frozen and snowed in here in Oklahoma. Sun’s out and campus resumes normal operations tomorrow. I will begrudgingly return to my office…to write. 🤦🏾‍♂️

NEW: My office is hearing that DOGE is now at the IRS. That means Musk's henchmen are in a position to dig through a trove of data about every taxpayer in America. And if your refund is delayed, they could very well be the reason.

"In 'The Carceral City: Slavery and the Making of Mass Incarceration in New Orleans, 1803–1930,' historian John Bardes recounts how Southern slaveowners relied on publicly funded urban jails to discipline, torture, and break enslaved people."—read more via @publicbooks.bsky.social:

Bad weather led to campus closure today. Been home cooking seafood gumbo and mustard greens to avoid writing. Will pick up my laptop around 5. 🤭🤷🏾‍♂️

🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️🤦🏾‍♂️

Haven’t posted a lick of Black Texas history yet. Been super busy 🤦🏾‍♂️. However, just know that Texas has the country’s largest Black population according to the 2020 Census! That’s a start!

This is the most important story in the United States right now. www.wired.com/story/treasu...

THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS A DEPARTMENT CREATED BY STATUTE; IT CANNOT BE ELIMINATED BY EXECUTIVE ORDER! EXECUTIVE ORDERS CANNOT REPEAL STATUTES! JUST LIKE DEPARTMENTS CANNOT BE CREATED BY EXECUTIVE ORDER! she shouts into the void

In our latest issue (21:4) we have a fantastic roundtable “Rethinking Care and Capitalism,” edited by Will Jones @willpjones.bsky.social, which debates the various relationships between care work and capitalism.

Welcome to all my new followers! I plan to start my Texas Black History posts this evening! Also, I’m promising fewer political posts as well. Less misery. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Black history month was born in resistance. We don't need anyone's permission to do the research, to write to read, or to speak. Let's just keep going the work.

The White House's proclamation for Black History Month 2025 names 5 people specifically. Two people who were instrumental in pushing back against white supremacy in the 19th century, and exactly no one who who did anything to push back against white supremacy since. Not even MLK, Jr. is mentioned.

Taught Anne Hutchinson today. She really was a kickass woman!

That man is such a disgrace. And it’s only been 10 days. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Abolish Congress. They are abdicating their duties over power of the purse & "regulat[ing] Commerce with foreign Nations" (tariffs) If lawmakers are not going to perform their most basic constitutional functions, what are we paying them for? bsky.app/profile/stev...

Today, teaching about the so-called crack epidemic in my hip-hop and American culture class. Guess which country will come up a million times? Yup, Colombia… or Columbia if you’re the WH Press. 🤭

we have a president with a tenuous grip on small legislative majorities who is out of the gate with a flurry of dramatically unpopular orders and who has just demonstrated his weakness on the international stage. if i were an elected member of his domestic opposition, i might try to draw real blood.

Decided to drop all of my outstanding work to watch Conclave tonight! I will get back to writing in the morning. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Minnesota last year eliminated prison gerrymandering. A law, signed by Governor Tim Walz, will end the practice of counting incarcerated people where prisons are located, which skews political power within the state. boltsmag.org/minneso...

Before the election, I warned that Trump would pardon all of the Jan. 6 defendants and some of them would form the core of a new rightwing paramilitary organization loyal to Trump. At the time, people dismissed me as alarmist. I stand by that prediction.

President Donald Trump rescinded former President Joe Biden’s 2021 executive order promoting voting access and expanding voter registration. www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

Ate some good Cajun pasta earlier. Back in bed now, but only for an hour or so. Then, it’s class prep time, light writing, and probably 4 episodes of First 48. What inauguration? 🤭🤷🏾‍♂️

A lesson from the TikTok Affair should be that bipartisan efforts to preserve U.S. national security are vulnerable to the incoming president getting bought off and switching sides for his own personal and political benefit. Not great!

AOC: “We are on the eve of an authoritarian administration.” 🇺🇸

Look, TikTok will be back by Friday next week. We have returned to an era of stunts, cons, and in your face corruption. Buckle up! No one will be held accountable either. 🤦🏾‍♂️

Tonight, we light the fireplace. 🤭

this confirms something i have long suspected, which is that certain people are told that their professional and academic failures are because of “affirmative action” or “DEI” as a way to avoid difficult conversations about their mediocrity www.wsj.com/lifestyle/ca...
