The cartoon sums it up. But the reporting and editorials do not. The Times urges govt to do a deal with the US “urgently” but fails to explain to its readership what we stand to lose if we do. Maybe if the right hadn’t peddled Brexit so furiously and dishonestly, we wouldn’t now be on our knees.

Institutions used to be able to stand up for truth. We are seeing institutions (the BBC, universities, learned societies) shy away from controversial subjects and abdicate their responsibilities. Any subject can be made controversial. Institutions have a role to help guide people to the truth.
