Goodnight from the twitching lace curtain radar network of Maiden Lane, on high alert after yesterday’s Wishblood vandalism. Goodnight from Gabriel Withall, burying his father’s clasp knife in Ruddle Wood in hopes of summoning Hal the Cutter to his aid. Goodnight from Hookland.

Sometimes I wonder if our culture's fascination with apocalyptic and post apocalyptic novels and movies, is a product of our collective unconscious trying to tell us to prepare for something.

I could have done this a lot more easily by walking around from hatch to hatch and using the comm to contact each transport directly, but it would have been ridiculously obvious that I was doing something, even if the humans couldn’t tell what it was.

Day 8 series everyone should read His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman #booksky #30daybookchallenge

Vernor Vinge truly shaped the SFF landscape! 🌌✨ "Deepness In The Sky" is a masterpiece! Let's celebrate his legacy and the worlds he created! 💖 #SFF #VernorVinge

#JoCoCruise! Spent last week on the ever-magical @jococruise.bsky.social. Always the most creative, chaotic, fun "work" week of my year. Fun fact: I'm HORRIBLE about taking pics. I never remember to. Thank goodness there are insanely talented folks like John Scalzi watching, snapping and posting.

It's freezing here, America! Only we hardy Canadians can handle this intense weather. Also, Canada is not for sale.

From #AHAPerspectives in 2021: Vaccine hesitancy is "a 21st-century problem," wrote Gareth Millward on the modern goal of infectious disease eradication. "Vaccine refusal is a bigger problem for public health professionals today than it was just 30 years ago." 🗃️

Personally I'm fine being identified as a science fiction author. It's what I generally write. Also science fiction is a hugely capacious in terms of what you can write inside of it. I've never felt limited in subject or time or place.

The Path of Enigma

Overtaking someone on foot: -Accelerate to uncomfortable speed -Once past, continue for at least two miles -Never look behind you -Collapse from exhaustion

time off is fine but it's a pain in the neck not having a book to obsess about

Am I qualified to be a scientist? Requirements: 1. Current training on PPE. 2. Exhaustive knowledge of a field of science. 2. Deep understanding of statistics and calculus. 3. Amateur glass-blowing skills sufficient not to burn lab down (OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED)

Goodnight from the Coreham police canteen, where DS Nokes is grounding himself with a bacon bap after this evening’s star rot cult unpleasantness. Goodnight from Annabel Hubbard, listening at the door as her parents argue about dealing with a generational curse. Goodnight from Hookland.

Apparently it’s multiple sclerosis awareness week—I completely forgot until I saw this review today of SO LUCKY. Not that I ever forget I have MS. Because, y’know, ♿️ So: crips, queers, books, and there’s even a cat… Enjoy!

What is your 40 in the Chapel P? Are you treadmilling back-and-forth up and down the halls? Are you near a window? Can you see the blue sky in the distance? #robertantonwilson #chapelperilous #sittingnowpodcast #rwyasn www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypGf...

Imagine a world where nations help instead of trying to occupy each other. We would all be residents of our tiny Earth in this endless universe. There would be no foreigners anymore. Think of the joy and belonging that would spread everywhere. 🌟 (Share stories that help people find commonality)

A lovely little profile page for one J. G. Ballard of Shepperton, Middx, from May 1962’s “New Worlds Science Fiction” magazine. In it, Ballard’s then-radical belief that SciFi should turn from rocket ships to “inner space” is respectfully referenced. A revolution on that principle was on its way.

I'm making quick drawings of book characters, prompted by patrons. Here's the sinister Blind Pew from Treasure Island, requested by @drfogout.bsky.social

Military chiefs from nearly all the 32 NATO countries will be meeting in Paris tomorrow to discuss Ukraine. I say nearly all. America hasn’t been invited.

I don't mind a little grain in photos (particularly concert photos, where they add to the atmosphere) and in any event I shoot RAW format so there are lots of ways to massage the picture in post. I unapologetically tweak levels and occasionally paint out an errant microphone.

I proposed to my then girlfriend using the comic strip back in 1999 and today I’ve been married to my beautiful wife Kara for 25 years! Happy anniversary to my best friend and the love of my life! www.penny-arcade.com/comic/1999/0...

A wonderful dream sequence in this Gasoline Alley Sunday strip by Frank King from March 11, 1923.

We have got to that point in the greening of the year where you can no longer rely upon Stay Belows being at their winter mud. The deep pools and ponds of the county wake with a hunger, wake with a glimpsing of faces floating in the neath. Parental scarelore blossoms. – #EmilyCBanting, 1982

I knew Kevin from the early days of the blogosphere. He was smart and thoughtful (the first does not always imply the second) and a great read. He will be missed.

The challenge: In March, post a book by a woman author every day (or as often as you can). I only just discovered this: challenge accepted! Rules: It has to be a book you’ve read. It has to be a book you enjoyed or learned something from. #booksky #books #bookchallenge 💙📚

I am at the Victoria & Albert Museum today & delighted to find “Tippoo’s Tiger,” a wooden statue of a tiger eating a British soldier, which makes the sound of the soldier’s wails when cranked. It was owned by Tipu Sultan of Seringapatam prior to his death at the hands of British soldiers.

I know the hills of England are hollow for I have put my ear to them an hear the century-slow breathing of dragons and sleeping kings. Put my ear to them and heard the distant bells of St. Martin's Land, a swinging of hammers in the Devil's own forges. – #CLNolan #Folklore

One day, we will wake up and he will be dead. That keeps me going.

It’s Harriet Tubman Day. Don’t argue with people she would have shot.

Artist Jean Giraud sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/giraud... - better known as Moebius - died on this day; so here's some of his book artwork. The 4th is an internal illustration for Robert Bloch's "Contes de Terreur":

“The right to have access to every building in the city by private motorcar, in an age when everyone possesses such a vehicle, is actually the right to destroy the city.” - Lewis Mumford

I'm seeing a lot of these. Is anyone else? www.tumblr.com/dougfort/777...

This might actually be one of the best things I have ever read www.curbed.com/article/ihop...

Edward Hopper Rooms by the Sea

God these motherfuckers are gonna make me start morning drinking - climate change causes population shifts and conflict over resources - rising sea levels are impacting DOD installations - and as the OP said, weather conditions are vital for mil ops, inc visibility, tides, precipitation, etc

Mikhail Bulgakov sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/bulgak... died on this day, so here are some of his book covers (4th by Henri Lievens, couldn't identify the other artists):
