Last night: butter beans (canned) braised in olive oil and chicken stock (made from veg scraps and the carcass of a store-bought rotisserie chicken), with rosemary, wilting broccolini and some diced salami from the snack drawer. Whole thing took less than 30 min.

I think my parents wanted a big family to fit in with the rest of the community, not because they actually wanted to raise kids. I imagine that motivation is common in religious groups.

I have tried very hard to break the cycle with my own 2 boys. It has been very helpful that my wife grew up in a much healthier household than I did. Nice to have a model.

Short answer? I don’t know. Longer answer: the absolute number that a given couple can effectively and lovingly attend to probably varies based on a bunch of factors. I do think though that there comes a point where one’s attention can’t be divided further without negative consequences.
