Public health is under attack in America. Maternal and child health is under attack in America. Health research is under attack in America. Ultimately it won't just cost us in advancements, it'll cost us lives.

The National Cancer Institute (part of NIH) released new guidelines for "controversial, high-profile or sensitive" keywords that require "review prior to publication" if included in a product or materials. Keywords include abortion, obesity, and peanut allergies.

I was unable to attend the Indy @standupforscience.bsky.social march today because I had already committed to a horse show in Ohio with my daughter. But my beloved Oliver šŸ¦„ still helped me resist in our own way. #standupforscience (spoiler alert: we even won our class šŸ’ŖšŸ»)

Our paper is out, and it is distressing. Rapid butterfly declines across the United States during the 21st century | Science www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

In an unprecedented move, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has begun mass terminations of research grants that fund active scientific projects because they no longer meet ā€œagency prioritiesā€ā€¦. šŸ§Ŗ #AcademicSky www.nature.com/articles/d41...

BREAKING: We're sending an open letter to universities across the country, offering support and urging them to reject pressure to punish international students and faculty for exercising their First Amendment rights. Schools must hold firm against the Trump administration's censorship attempts.

I've been noodling a lot lately on academic freedom and the ability of faculty members to speak as individual faculty members I get the impression that many are self-muzzling due for self-preservation purposes This is a quick šŸ§µ on speaking out as an academic faculty member 1/

Those of you in science who are starting to noodle on how to organize: The Good Trouble Coalition in Indiana (@goodtroublein.bsky.social) did this in 2022 and have a blueprint for you here: jha.scholasticahq.com/article/125183

This crossed my mind weeks ago but I stuffed it away under a ā€œthereā€™s no wayā€ category. After all of the attacks on NIH, itā€™s clear I was wrong to dismiss it. We must link arms, stand up, support each other, and fight this hostile take down.

How did the US become a land of opportunity? In a new paper, we show that the country's pioneering role in mass education was key to its rise in intergenerational mobility from 1850 to 1950. "America's Rise in Human Capital Mobility" with Harriet Brookes Gray & Hugo Reichardt

Terrific piece by @wdownard.bsky.social for @indianacapitalchronicle.com on effects proposed federal cuts would have on Indiana They are huge- 44% of Indiana's budget is federal dollars (the 3rd most in the US) In Indiana we undertax and underspend indianacapitalchronicle.com/2025/02/28/w...

Francis Collins, longtime NIH director with bipartisan bona fides*, retires as of yesterday. He returned to NIH in 2023 to focus on research in his own lab, in the NIH in-house intramural research campus. His letter seems to imply he wasnā€™t ready to leave. NIH is being torn down. 1/šŸ§Ŗ #academicsky

As we can expect PubMed dysfunction more and more or to be swamped with fake journals I suggest you get acquainted to this nice alternative: europepmc.org

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Another loss for #science & the next generation of researchers. The 28-year running NIDA summer internship program is cancelled for this year. @altnih4science.bsky.social #SavetheNIH

It's official. The grant proposal I spent months writing and that includes thousands of dollars in experiments was not reviewed because the study section did not meet. This is happening to tons of labs; we're not unique, but it still hurts. This is illegal and society's response is weak at best.

In case you were wondering how the Trump admin was still freezing NIH funds, despite court orders, this is how. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Where are our institutional leaders? Why am I not seeing statements posted denouncing these cuts? Why is almost every major medical school, particularly in red states, my own included, absolutely silent on what is going on? If we wonā€™t save ourselves, who will?

No reason this can't happen everywhere

I'm delighted to share our opinion on #papermills published in Nature. Science is flooded with papers from paper mills.Certain steps can be taken, but this is a challenge that neither universities nor journals are ready to face. Some use paper mills to their advantage. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

American institutionsā€”from the media to Congressā€”continue to underreact to the unraveling of our democracy. Overseas our media would not hesitate to call what weā€™re living through a full-blown autocratic coup. Here's my attempt at the story they should write: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-trump...

NOAA is reportedly on the DOGE chopping block. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

On #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience let me remind you that we are NOWHERE NEAR parity. A few examples. 1. Women are credited less in science than men. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This: ā€œThese cuts should be a rallying cry for higher education to come together to make the case forā€¦ research and teaching. Leaders have an opportunity to step forward... Conflicts between faculty and administratorsā€¦ should be set aside to focus attention on this ruthless takedown of academia.ā€

Note, this only applies to institutions in AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IL, MA, ME, MD, NV, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OR, RI, VT, WA, and WI - because the injunction applies only "within Plaintiff States" Institutions in states with red governors/AGs - Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, etc. - remain screwed
