Public comment is now open for passport gender marker changes. You can go here to go to each of the three proposed passport rules, and submit comment. My suggestion: be unique, argue for trans-inclusive policies, against the constitutionality of the changes, etc. www.reddit.com/r/Passports/...

EMERGENCY PIECE: Elon Musk Wants to Get Operational Control of the Treasury’s Payment System. This Could Not Possibly Be More Dangerous. Worse, exclusive new information revealed here explicate how Musk’s actions relate to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent (Link at the end)

Everyone concerned about data loss right now should learn about the End of Term Web Archive, which I believe has been working on preserving federal websites for the past 8 months. The dataset you fear has been lost may well be here Just an incredible project. Thank you to everyone involved

I mean yes, there is such a concept in Christianity. It appears quite notably in the letters of Paul, for instance, where it’s a concept he *relentlessly* argues against, and in the Gospel where it’s a concept Jesus very much repeatedly scorns. So it is technically in there!

Focus on 1 or 2 things. Go deep on those. Focus on "news" about those things first and foremost. Think about the concrete actions you can take to impact those ONE or TWO things.

Super fascinating climate-communication study making the rounds today, thanks to @katharinehayhoe.com. Skeptics who changed their minds went through a three-step process, which began with a "distancing from their ideological community." 👇 🧵

William James was born OTD in 1842. As important as “pragmatism” to understanding James is “meliorism,” the idea that improving the world is possible, but not assured. We have to fight for it. “We receive in short the block of marble, but we carve the statue ourselves.” #philsky

1. Plant biology or Mycology or ecology (somethings studying the natural world) 2. Academic Editor or something in academic publishing (came close to pursuing this one when I was struggling to find a job in academia) 3. Urban planning

Lovely orange mushrooms (possibly enoki?) peaking out from the beneath leaves.

I finally read the article and the prof has created a course pack and flipped the classroom - all things people have been doing for many years and easily done without AI. Also the “textbook” cover is gibberish

1st post on bsky - about bsky! I was fascinated with academic starter packs and made an interactive network to see academic communities and how they connect - a map of knowledge! link to an interactive & searchable network: ketikagarg.github.io/blueSkyAcade...

Me, (over)thinking about all the ways I'm falling short this semester: I can absolutely fix all my courses over the three week winter break. Next semester will be totally different...

Since I'm still fairly new to ungrading, the biggest challenge is just figuring out how to do it and make it manageable for me and the students. I constantly have to rethink and redesign my classes. It's a good challenge, but sometimes difficult nonetheless.

been using a mix of labor and specs grading. Students seem to like the transparency and control it gives them and express reduced anxiety. I don't think I've managed to harness their intrinsic motivation but I do think it helps them focus more on process over "getting it right". #ungradingchat

another curmudgeonly thread for the many of you who will be entering organizing spaces. all other things being equal, when confronted with one team of people recruiting you to Be a Thing and another team recruiting you to Do a Thing, please give serious thought to joining the second.

Disturbing: A big reason Trump won was undecideds couldn't be persuaded that millions of jobs lost in 2020 and death of Roe were Trump's fault, internal Harris campaign polling showed. Biden/Ds let Trump rehabilitate himself to disastrous effect. New piece: newrepublic.com/article/1882...

Actions that protect the climate while also connecting us to one another in solidarity are now more important than ever. What are your favorite ways to build community while reducing emissions?

as long as journalists and pundits act as if they are amateur political strategists & not people trying to understand and tell the truth about the world, they are going to take the implicit view that voters can never be wrong, which then demands endless explanation of their morally blameless choice

New Stanford Encyclopedia article out today, written by myself and Katharine Jenkins: Feminist Metaphysics plato.stanford.edu/entries/femi... #philsky

I'm currently trying to raise $100,000 to keep REBUILD going into 2025. I'm so grateful to those who have reached out to me and made some financial commitments to support by 12/31. Thank you. I'm still far away from the goal but will persist until we reach it. www.mightycause.com/story/Rebuil...

Shaggy: jinkies, Scoob! A reanimated corpse! Mary Shelley: it’s an allegory for man’s hubris. Shaggy: Scooby: ruh-roh

This is an excellent piece by CNN writer Sana Noor Haq, in collaboration with our fantastic visuals team. Weeks of painstaking work went into this, so do take a moment to read www.cnn.com/interactive/...

There is real apocalyptic destruction here in Asheville, but this spirit of cooperation is also very widespread. Don't succumb to doom-laden bs and rumors. People here, with a lot of solidarity from elsewhere, are taking very effective action and things are improving.

What's unfolding in Western NC and E Tennessee is a disaster of monumental proportions--please keep the people there in your thoughts and help as you can. BUT ALSO: Project 2025 wants to dismantle NOAA (weather tracking/warnings), FEMA, and effective governance in general. Remember that as you vote

Best source for updates out of western North Carolina I've found yet.

Another grade inflation article that is really a grade compression article. The author quixotically wants grades to be something they can never be: meaningful, objective measurements of learning. 1/x

Turns out she's not trans but Klingon

A beautiful mushroom emerges from its egg

Exactly this. More specifically, it’s based on the idea that dispassionate, reasoned argument can convince people to do the right thing, to vote in the right way, and this has NEVER been true. MLK Jr. recognized this when he organized his protest movement.

This research has come up several times at a big climate conference: A huge majority of people are worried about climate change and want governments to do more to control the crisis. BUT they think they are in a tiny minority and nobody else cares. Everybody (almost) cares! You are not alone 🧪

FINE

New academia reality tv show in which hundreds of highly trained candidates get winnowed down to one champion, who is awarded the opportunity to teach intro classes outside their speciality with no research support!

So much deep thinking about student writing not only wrt gen AI but also how students come to know themselves as writers. 👍🏾 cc: @thetattooedprof.bsky.social @weaverrew.bsky.social @geekypedagogy.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/helenbee...
