An entire US agency was abolished this weekend without congressional authorization.

Me: Oh no that trolley is going to run us over! Guy tied up on the track next to me who somehow thinks he's actually the guy holding the lever: Lol cry more 😂

Some things never change. For instance, UK universities decimating education, restructuring and running unis like businesses. Same story 10 years ago when I was part of UK academia. Join @ucu.org.uk.

“If the BBC or John Lewis was cutting 5,000 or 6,000 jobs, we’d hear all about it but what we’re seeing in universities isn’t being noticed//…//.” www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Eye bleach

why does this look like the behind the scenes of the trolley problem

Stop fucking saying he blamed “DEI,” which is some abstract, non-tangible idea. He is blaming people of color having jobs he thinks they aren’t qualified for. He’s blaming race. He’s being racist every time he says it. Journalists need to get fucking backbones, my word.

Maybe stop voting to confirm his nominees

@liasciortino.bsky.social Hi Lia! Lovely to see you here. We worked together in Bangkok a few years ago with Rebecca. Hope you are well!

Excellent post

More pro-life actions unfolding

I went to the Science Museum yesterday and as well as having a ball with my nearly four year old in their amazing child spaces (god love free London museums) I was utterly charmed by this caption.

"Harvard University has laid off its staff in the Harvard Slavery Remembrance Program, the unit of its $100 million Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery initiative tasked with identifying the direct descendants of those enslaved by Harvard affiliates."

I am seeing cancellation of similar initiatives at other higher ed institutions as well.

cool how Judith Butler said the gender critical movement is ideologically incapable of offering resistance to the coming fascism and got pilloried for using big words, and now official GC organisations are releasing statements of support for Trump's first acts as returning president

Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better… -For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return. -Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)

Sunday’s Zoom with @hcrichardson.bsky.social was full of wisdom on how to navigate 2025—focus on what you can control, find your people, and never stop learning. So, what’s your game plan to make it through the year?

I want to see how universities are responding to this.

NIH funding supports the vast majority of all biomedical research in the United States. Virtually every advance in American medicine and biological science comes from NIH. This is a blow against American science. Call Congress, 202-224-3121.

Trump has signed an executive order eliminating all funding for diversity and inclusion in the federal government, sending home DEI staff who will then be laid off. The historical echo for this is when Woodrow Wilson resegregated the federal government in 1913. We have reached the second nadir.

A lot of public universities will not survive the Trump administration—or, in Canada, the coming Poilievre government, which has promised to do much the same thing.

Today’s #photo. Your literal moment of #zen. #photography #Buddha #calm #serene #peaceful

It’s going to be great to see all those Asian Americans who have been silent on genocide become very vocal about citizenship and belonging (to a nation that endorsed genocide).

Hats off to all who have dedicated themselves to exposing the facts of that dreadful day. Your work has mattered, still matters, & will matter. Don’t despair.

I’ve done the same. Her work is a must read.

The cruelty is the point.

These executive orders on banning federally funded entities from recognizing trans people or disallowing them from using the bathroom are not self-executing or immediately enforceable. They require formal rule making at a minimum. They are a scare tactic. Ignore and do not comply in advance.

Moment de rêve.

Incredible piece, and captures how we must rise to this moment, and lean into the storm. "Dr. King warned us not to fear the tension of the times. Instead Dr. King explained that those of us pressing for change do not create tension, they simply “bring tension to the surface.” " #rise #resist #mlk

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

Pasadena Humane has seen an influx of over 300 animals due to the fires. People lined up down the block to drop off beloved pets they could not take with them when they fled their homes. Some animals arrived with burns and injuries and are being treated. Donations and fosters are needed NOW.

This is absolutely true! And even when they see it up close (friends/family, etc), they don’t fully understand the complexity of the process.

A must read.

A Boston colleague (not on Bluesky) asked me to post this ad for a 2-year postdoc at Tufts on the Mellon Foundation-funded project University Ecologies and the Question of the Commons. Please forward widely! humanities.tufts.edu/postdoctoral...

Congratulations to TM Krishna on the Sangita Kalanidhi and for being the required persistent irritant in the Karnatik music world. www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXpy...

Israel arrests the director of one of northern Gaza's last functioning hospitals, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, along with dozens of other staff. Israel called him a suspected Hamas operative “while providing no evidence” (AP) #Gaza #Israel #stillhappening apnews.com/article/isra...

This is such a heartwarming news story.

This is quite impressive!

“Its closing leaves the State Department without a dedicated office for tracking and countering disinformation from US rivals for the first time in eight years. A measure to extend funding for the center was stripped out of the final version of the bipartisan federal spending bill.”

This is beautiful

I’d be cool with seeing Icarus’ story play out in real life.

A Mughal artist's view of one of the Jesuits who was at the court of Akbar (r. 1556-1605) and then his som Jahangir (r. 1605-1627). The most famous of these priests was Jerome Xavier, grand-nephew of St Francis Xavier. Walters Art Museum

This is a huge loss! RIP. Thank you for your music.

College freshman today were 6 years old in the 2012 election. A student of mine (age 20) told me after class that he appreciates when I explain how US politics and media were different before, because the Trump era is all he’s seen. This is what young Americans think politics is. It’s normal now.
