Whenever posed with “Can I ask you a question”, I am mandated to respond “I’m afraid I’m a happily married man.” It is a sickness.

The issue goes both ways though doesn’t it- if we continue to row in hard behind Zelensky, trump either visits and appears to support a country fighting openly against Russian interests, or he has to cancel and be done with the post war settlement.

Better dining room though.

Resigned my membership. This was enough.

Are these the same people who, pre-election, said trump was not a criminal because he had been found guilty of a crime but not, at that time, formally convicted and sentenced?

But why not, why ok? Are these not the pertinent questions?

What would they do with it though? There’s no invitation to go back, so you either deal with what we have (and look for small improvements) or you burn time, energy, and political capital.

It’s just realpolitik- dealing with the status quo as it is, not how you’d have liked it to have been. Even if the majority now view Brexit as regrettable (probably the case), that’s not the same as a solid majority to go back in (and on what terms), or indeed an opportunity to do so wrt the EU.

Well, compared to the last one we’re smashing it in terms of “world wars already finished” but admittedly struggling on the front of “world wars happening what we won”

Is it even more expensive in the UK? You can buy a bottle of pinot Grigio for less that £4 in most supermarkets- I’m not saying it’s great! Spirits, too, don’t seem to me to have moved with inflation like other stuff.

It’s rather curious to have gone in for an obviously split right, then *not* grab for PR. It’s certainly one way to keep Labour in power- but maybe it’s simply that, time and time again, the rainbow coalition would have held the balance of power.

Are there any good/particularly good ones? I’ve got a load of audible credits but I’d like to use them wisely!

Glad to be one of the foremost minds of the generation.

Said this to my parents the other night when we were discussing after 2nd reading passed- needs to be a commitment to solid health/ social/ welfare support that means the “dying is better than this” is about the experience of the dying process, not the experience of continuing to live.

The dog liked it anyway.

This wasn’t a government bill though…?

Agree- but Nautilus is magnificent in its own right and took me into the rest of her work, so it deserves its place.

I definitely keep myself on mute more online than in person. That has pros and cons to be honest.

Expressed exactly this take yesterday- Jag are talking about stopping production altogether for 2 years. Doing nothing would have meant they were (R)over fairly soon.

In the times of my life when I’ve been most active, it’s because I’ve been able to weave cycling into my activities of daily living. I love to commute by bike because it is both efficient and enjoyable. I definitely lose fitness and gain weight when I’m stuck in the car.

Ok fair enough- that’s insightful. It was helpful to me in articulating that allowing may be OK but doing is not. Prescribing is lawful as a form of facilitated allowing is (as far as I can see) the intention of the current bill and I probably fall on the “that’s acceptable” side of the fence.

I don’t think it’s fair to characterise opposition as religion. I don’t think it credible to say action to end a life promotes flourishing, but my liberal sensibility is that people should have choice and agency. I suppose I feel it’s acceptable to allow but not to do.
comment in response to post
There’s plenty that’s legal in some places and not others- if the point is that it *is* morally acceptable and compassionate then that is the crux to this argument. I would take the view that agency and choice in dying is a compelling and liberal case, but I have lots of reservations about it.

Well if you’re game let me know and I’ll give you my three (house name) words. Send me your what // three // words and I’ll reply back thusly. This could be interesting

My house has a completely unique (I.e. it’s the only one in the UK) name. I’ve always wondered if I could just put “stupid bald man’s house” [SIC] and a stamp- but in 7 years I’ve never actually tried…

…I further suspect the majority of pall care people who find it objectionable are expecting something bigger than this bill, or to be expected to administer- which this doesn’t do. What might be nice, though, is an amendment to ‘fix’ palliative care provision- a kind of dying double lock, perhaps.

…asked what they would need to take in order to ensure they died and were not at risk of surviving (badly) following an attempt at ending their life. I suspect that is probably already not unlawful. I suppose this bill would make the prescribing for that purpose also lawful…

Paediatric palliative care consultant (with extensive adult palliative care experience). I’ve always considered that, as a matter of harm reduction, it would be reasonable to give an honest and serious answer if a capacitous adult patient with a terminal diagnosis and a limited prognosis…

I definitely also think it was fairly negative to have random porn in basically every thread- the whole thing became NSFW - very embarrassing to navigate on a packed commuter train.

I deleted the app from my phone last week- just to stop compulsively clicking in and checking notifications. Felt great and haven’t been tempted to get back in. My one question is whether it’s important to disappear my old x accounts to add to the body count, or just leave it dormant?
