I console myself that, even if I can't use the word "clusterfuck" in an academic book, "omnishambles" serves just as well.

We should just come back to old tested academic traditions. Articles should have titles like "Some More Thoughts on Medieval Kingship" (87 pages), "Merovingian Gaul. A History" (3 pages, no footnotes), and "An Interesting Pendant from Paris" (unknown pagination, published in village-based journal).

Teaching in a world of bleakness. Wonderful article. universityaffairs.ca/career-advic...

When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

More thoughts on Eleanor Rykener in the BL's #MedievalWomen exhibition. Her inclusion is majorly important, not just because of *her* importance as a beacon of trans visibility in the historical record, but also the current anti-trans environment in the UK & elsewhere

“A fire can’t spread if you suck all the oxygen out of the room. As a foundational element of Canadian culture, the CBC has a public responsibility to fight Trump’s annexation threats with extreme prejudice at every opportunity they get.”

I see we’ve reached the “The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" stage of the second Trump administration. Not even bothering to stage whisper.

As promised, here are the slides I shared with students to convince them to NOT use chatGPT and other artificial stupidity. TL;DR? AI is evil, unsustainable and stupid, and I'd much rather they use their own brains, make their own mistakes, and actually learn something. 🪄

These are my actual politics.

Judith Butler: "Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third, a fourth, and then what happens?"

Catalogue descriptions for the 5000+ records in Star Chamber proceedings, Henry VIII [TNA STAC 2] have now all been tidied up, improving searchability and fixing the sort order (among other things). Enjoy! discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/browse/r/r/C...

I was at a punk show in 83 where a skinhead jumped up on stage and gave a Nazi salute. The bass player hit him with his bass, knocking him into the crowd and 150 people collectively hauled his ass out of the venue and threw him in the mud. This was the right and only appropriate response.

Re universities' AI policies and student work: allowing essays to be "structured" with Chat GPT help and also writing "edits" is abdicating the very value of university-level education itself. these two elements are the hardest parts honing critical thinking and the difficult work of writing

Quite an exchange here between Judge Reyes and DOJ attorney on how "pronoun usage" affects military readiness.

It is actually genuinely funny that the Army looked at the Executive Order and said "no"

Oh. My. Goodness. This is TRULY stunning! A Bronze Age goldworker's hoard.... and will you *look* at that anvil!!! 😍 finds.org.uk/database/art... (P.S. Well done to the detectorist who stopped immediately, called the specialists, which meant the whole hoard was lifted in a block) #Archaeology

Yesterday, I made a post about a documentary that was recently released called "Arming the Left". I was certainly a bit alarmed by it, having dedicated so much of my energy and time throughout the years trying to push back against some of what I feel are bad tendencies I've seen repeatedly on

aaaand now it all makes sense

A student today said of the Venus of Willendorf that she’s “serving fertility,” and this is why teaching gives me life.

Go ahead, put me on a watch list. I'll put it on my CV at this point.

I can feel the seeds of a completely unnecessary and expensive special interest taking root.. must resist.

Got a new magnet

Well. I did it. I submitted my book on the history of how the US government has removed Indigenous children from their families. From colonization to removal to boarding schools to today. For middle schoolers. I think it's the first book of its kind. I can't believe I got to do it.

the podcast with arguably the most learned and eclectic collection of guests (yes, I am placing myself alongside Dr. Ally Louks, and probably the only time I can).

On this week’s podcast we watched Parasite with Dr Ally Louks and posed the vital question, “What do podcasts smell like?”

Just a reminder that diversity is, in fact, a source of strength, that diverse and inclusive armies outperform exclusionary ones on modern battlefields, and that this anti-DEI witch hunt will actually harm cohesion in the US military I'm gonna send Pete a copy of my book
