House Republicans just voted to gut Medicaid, which covers 1 in 5 Americans overall, including 41% of births and 63% of nursing home care. They also just voted to gut SNAP, on which 41 million food insecure Americans rely. This won’t just harm people. This will kill people. They own this.

We met with policymakers about the importance of federal programs that support biomedical research and discovery. Proposed NIH F&A cuts to 15% would cost UCSF ~$200M annually, threatening life-saving research. We urge protecting the current rate negotiation system.

US House and Senate majorities are working on a budget reconciliation that will likely include nearly a trillion dollars in cuts to Medicaid. This Special Communication details who Medicaid insures, how it is financed and delivered, and its evolution. https://ja.ma/4ihq5Gx

This will be a disaster for nursing home residents who rely on Medicaid, the only public insurance that covers long term care!

"VA researchers whose contracts are about to expire . . . will not be renewed, even when funding [through extramural grants is] in place to pay them. Should the VA continue this policy . . . over the months to come, the entire VA research workforce could be decimated."

Alex Tolbert is running a stellar conference next week at Emory that I am bummed to be missing out on. The speaker lineup is especially remarkable- spanning theoretical computer science to machine learning to law to philosophy. You should go and enjoy it for me. 39893947.hs-sites.com/aiethicsconf...

This is potentially a huge deal, since it is an internal appeals board laying out criteria saying some probationary firings were illegal, e.g. for citing performance rationales with no evidence. Could rippled out to include many more employees. www.govexec.com/workforce/20...

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.

I think there are huge opportunities for young Democratic leaders to fight against Trump and Musk. History told us many times that great leaders are created often in dark times by those who lead the people through the darkest.

I am spending a lot of time right now strategizing on how to support and nurture our next generation of health scientists. We need you. ❤️

In the week's Research Roundup we're highlighting DMAC CERCIT @ UTMB! Comparative Effectiveness Research on Cancer in Texas (CERCIT) was established in 2010 as a statewide resource for outcomes and comparative effectiveness research funded by The Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT)

Midwives play an important role in providing birth-related care that is centered on parents' needs and wishes. The health care system too often gets in the way of practices that can improve birth outcomes. Learn more in our new Issue Brief! @chcfnews.bsky.social www.chcf.org/wp-content/u...

Hey US Office of Personnel Management--At many VA's care is hampered by nursing shortage-Nurses could get easier higher paying jobs in private sector-but stay because they are committed to Veterans. It seems you want them to quit--Some will, Veteran care will be harmed--and you will be responsible.

I strongly support the NIH Diversity Supplement Program. Addressing the severe lack of diversity among biomedical researchers improves the quality of research. It's not a level playing field. This program helps restore equity through mentored training. Rescinding this program is a big mistake
