David Johansen. The week after I moved to SI, I went to explore my local park in the dead of winter, and met him there. Had a brief but lovely conversation. Also he helped a lot of friends of mine when they needed it the most. Luv.

i saw r.e.m. the night after the 2008 election & recently re-ran what i wrote about that night: jukeboxgraduate.com/remnants-wel... the songs are all still there & i'm sure everyone's understanding "man-sized wreath" as well as they did back then

Calling yourself a king doesn’t make you a king. Donning coke-bottle glasses and suspenders while ping-ponging from nonsequitur to nonsequitur makes you a King.

i think it has not sunk in for people, including newspaper headline writers, that "probationary" employees does not just mean like, young novice staffers right out of college, but those who have received promotions in the last year

looking back, AOL had it right. 30 hours of internet per month was the right amount.

Mahomes and Brady are being terrible at their jobs at the same time. It’s a good day to be a hater:

This destroyed me.

“Screaming. A million mouths screaming but also laughing the sky will bleed and there shall be a great flensing a burning away of the flesh it is coming there is no way to stop what is coming.”

Given all this, 6 more weeks of winter seems pretty kind

Marianne Faithfull with Jarvis Cocker, “Sliding Through Life On Charm.” From 2002: a 4 minute encapsulation of a FASCINATING life. Wholly recommended. m.youtube.com/watch?embeds...

If you say something positive about a person's actions or qualities when they are not present, make a point (go out of your way, even) to tell that person how much you value them as well. It will make your life, and theirs, better.

If anyone reads my diary in 1000 years they'll think I was nuts: Trump II, Day 8: Constitutional crisis sparked by impoundment of federal grants & loans. Or will be if anyone notices what happened. Sleep OK, mostly stuck to diet. Going for long walk to make Fitbit happy.

I’m not ready for this Buffalo Bills season to end. Go Bills.

RIP Tony Slattery, who I must have watched eight million times after school when Comedy Central aired the UK version of Whose Line is it Anyway (and Kids in the Hall) during the afternoons. A truly funny man who had to endure more than any person should. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4x0...

A reveal in the debate about fact-checking: how little the platforms care about users who come to Facebook/X etc. for information. I get why malign or crooked people might build a business promoting floor wax as a cure for cancer. Are they the true customer? Apparently yes.

Jackie Clarke (an old school UCB friend of mine) is one of the good ones. I know I don’t have too much pull on the internet, and I know there’s a lot that’s lost, but if you can help: gofund.me/d1fa6a31

I love Los Angeles. Stay safe, friends.

My issue is not with the toll. It’s that the design of the program is literally going to worsen pollution and congestion in my own neighborhood (an urban area in NYC) to make life better for some of the richest people on the planet and corporations that don’t pay their fair share of taxes.

I'm a bit shaken up right now. My Amtrak train pulled into Trenton, NJ, and we seemed to be sitting a bit longer than normal. We heard the conductor come on and say there was someone on the train who didn't belong here and the police were removing them.

The Staten Island side of the Verrazano Bridge currently has no less than 15 police cars stopping every white passenger vehicle (cars and SUV) so that’s not ominous at all

These are the words of an extremist. At the moment we should band together to condemn domestic terrorism, this guy incites fear against teachers. Shame on him. Students and teachers deserve better.

How Did This Beloved Thing Get So Bad? a guy wanted to get richer What Happened To All Thos— let me stop you there. a guy wanted to get richer Why Is Th— a guy wanted to get richer Have You Noticed Th— a guy wanted to get richer Where Did— a guy wanted to get richer

There’ll be no distance that can hold us back

A lot of political theorists and historians seem to be unaware of the Humperdinck/Rugen Theories of Engagement, which is alarming. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. We can’t afford more Guilders. Not now. Not ever.

27 years ago tonight, I went to my first, and still only, Phish show. It was widely considered one of the greatest ever shows. So I win at Phish.

Jimmy Carter by Andy Warhol (1976) #RIP

Remember the right-wing plot to sabotage Jimmy Carter’s re-election by urging Iran to hold American hostages longer? You don’t? It’s a shocking example of the American right’s treachery that more people should know about. (Gift link to 2023 NYT story.)

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy vs Laura Loomer and Ann Coulter

Merry Christmas to all, comrades and scabs alike ❤️💚

Merry Christmas from your local grocery store!

Some thoughts on the year’s end and a playlist: medium.com/@dunford/202...

I will forever love Paul Giamatti bc once at a Globes after party I ask if I could hold his golden globe for $5 and he said sure and I did and we took a photo and then he held out his hand and I gave him that $5 and he said “nice doing business with you” and he’s a g for real for always for that

RIP Rickey

This is great. And prompted me to extend the notion to neighboring states. Brooklyn + Queens + the Bronx + Staten Island = Montana + Wyoming + Nebraska + Iowa In other words, the same number of Americans who live in 472 square miles scattered across 526,000 square miles.

David Zaslav, like so many other execs in creative industries and beyond, can’t imagine that something can be thriving and essential if it’s not growing exponentially forever.

At a mall, with a wife and child who love listening to Christmas music while we drive. Feel like I’m playing Whammageddon roulette now
