Re your ending paragraph about getting rid of carryons - when I visited the USSR in the '80s, we boarded one of Aeroflot's larger jets by entering the lower deck, dropping our bags, and then going upstairs to the passenger deck. No waiting to check bags or pick them up. no concern about losing them.
