A bit windy today, but found time for a short search in the surf with my detector and sand scoop. Not much luck though. A few Norwegian and Swedish coins from the 1970s.

Last summer this coin showed up on my metal detector in Norwegian waters. It is from Ukraine, hard beaten, but still with it's identity intact. 🇧🇻🇺🇦

The gold bracteats looks great after conservation at the Archaelogical Museum of Stavanger. Probably worn by an important woman 1500 years ago. Was it just hidden or sacrificed to the Norse gods?

I love the reply! 👍😂

I detected George Washington in Norway a year ago. It's a so called success token with his portrait and the words "Success to the United States" and 15 stars for the first 15 states in the USA. It could be as old as 1792-95. ID that fits: coins.nd.edu/washtoken/wa...

An old Norwegian shilling from the field today. It reads "1 skilling species" and the king is "Carl Johan XIV". The year is not visible, but probably 1820-34.

In 2023 I detected a gold ring on a local farm, stamped: 18 carat, June 1835 and goldsmith Peter Arent Magnus. Turns out he emigrated to America in 1855, where he continued his work as a goldsmith until his death in 1874. Four initials in the ring has been linked to two possible women at the farm.

I detected this silver ring in the surf at a Norwegian beach last year. Given world politics at the moment, it should probably be thrown in a volcano as soon as possible.

The second search of 2025 resulted in a few Norwegian coins. 5 øre 1932, 2 øre 1923 and 1 øre 1908. Found on Rennesøy with my Manticore and the M9 coil. A bit cold, but very nice day.

Time to relax. The Finnish immigrant in the family brought some great cultural influence to Norway. 🇧🇻🇫🇮😉

These two bits of an S-shaped fibula (brooch) from the Merovingian era 550-600s CE, will be really cool when cleaned up by the museum in Stavanger. One piece is clearly a head and fits nicely with the example photo of a more complete example, found by others. I detected the fragments last summer.

One of the more interesting finds with my detector in 2024 was this chess pawn shaped weight from the Middle ages. In Norwegian I'm pretty sure I found "den norske bonden". It's with the museum now.

This is my only Norwegian silver crown detected so far. It showed up in Randaberg last year and is from 1897.

My first detector trip of 2025 resulted in a couple of old coins that will be Hard to ID. Probably Norwegian shillings of some kind. 27.8 mm and 7.0-7.3 g.

Winter in Norway is not the best time for metal detecting. Hoping to get a chance to get out there this weekend, as the weather seems to heat up a bit.

My best detector find of 2024 was probably this bronze crossbow fibula from the 400s, Migration period. It was mentioned in the christmas calender for cultural heritage in Rogaland, as one of the best finds of the year, among 121 delivered finds from detectorists locally in 2024.

One of the 9 gold bracteats I found with my metal detector in Rennesøy Norway. It is about 1500 yo and can be seen at the Archaelogical Museum of Stavanger. The motive is a wounded horse that scientists link to Norse mythology as a symbol of healing and resurrection.
