UPDATE: The Coeur d’Alene Press spoke with the woman who was dragged out of a town hall for heckling legislators, confirmed which security firm worked the event and spoke with Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris and Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White about the events.

We had pouring rain yesterday so the moss has gone from crispy to lush. I went to visit the wood that's teeming with one of my favourite species, Hookeria lucens and it looked gorgeous. The leaves are a single cell thick & transparent. You can see each cell. #moss #botany #macrophotography #nature

“Your voice is meaningless right now. ... I can talk over all of you” said the emcee at the GOP event as the woman objecting to Medicaid cuts was dragged out.

I wish I had notice that I was going to be sick, then I could stock up before hand....

Delaware, your voices want to be heard!👇🏾

In a time that seems so anti-science I encourage anyone that wants to do #scicomm to join in and try different ways that vibe with you! Whether it's videos, blogs, zines, or more! We need more! Don't let gatekeeping stop you. Keep doing you, online and/or offline! #science #outreach

The word(s) of the week: Malicious Compliance. Malicious compliance is the act of following a superior's orders to the letter, even if the outcome is negative or unintended. In the workplace, it can be seen as an act of rebellion, where an employee uses the company's own rules against them.

Is it true?

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

The National Institutes of Health had to stop considering new grant applications, delaying funding for research into diseases ranging from heart disease and cancer to Alzheimer's and allergies.

To reiterate: we WILL NOT host rallies at sites without a lead and a team. So, if you want to attend a rally in a state that is red or grey, you gotta step up! #standupforscience @standupforscience.bsky.social

KEEP PUSHING! If they won’t do a town hall DEMAND ONE

WaPo Page One: “If you’re going to just yell at me, that’s not going to be an effective town hall,” McCormick said .. “But we’re pissed!” a woman shouted. #GA07 www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Rep. Fitzgerald was booed by his own voters at a town hall after trying to defend DOGE's mass layoffs by referencing "waste, fraud, and abuse". Turns out, they’re not buying it.

I chatted with a program director at NIH for a half hour just now It's clear that the people who make American science happen are doing everything they can to keep making it happen in a very difficult environment They deserve our respect and gratitude

I don't know, why didn't you?

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

Yes, it is entirely correct to point out that ICE officers do not have any legal authority to break into somebody’s home unless they get a judicial warrant; which they generally cannot do, because judges only issue warrants for probable cause of crimes, not immigration law violations.

BREAKING — States attorneys general lead by @newyorkstateag.bsky.social were just granted a preliminary injunction in their case against DOGE. The team cannot access Treasury Department payment systems or data while the lawsuit proceeds. Major.

The consequences of the illegal shutdown of USAID:

I just need to know other people are also upset and taking action.

Side note. There are eight members of the joint chiefs. the chair is black. the CNO (navy) is a woman. the other six are white guys. chair and the cno got fired tonight.

Let’s go.

I’m heartbroken for Haskell. I teach about Indigenous geographies every summer there as part of an NSF-funded internship/workshop—we’re prepared for this to be our last year of it. The staff and faculty make that university an absolutely beautiful place.

What was it that the ABA said about the rule of law the other day?

...and it continued.

🚨☀️ Hey Bluesky! Know anyone near the following cities that would be willing to help us Stand Up for Science? ☀️🚨 Annapolis, MD Bismarck, ND Boise, ID Charleston, WV Dover, DE Jackson, MS Anchorage or Juneau, AK Montpelier, VT Richmond, VA Send them our way! #standupforscience2025

So. It has officially happened. I have been officially let go from my position at CDC. I wasn’t a probationary employee. I had stellar performance reviews every year. I’ll be ok. But please understand that many worked HARD to get into these positions and were doing great public health work.

NSF changed my life for the better. I was working as an engineer in NY and got a call from my potential advisor that his grant on climate decision-making just was awarded, could I start the doctoral program in a month? Three weeks later I was there. Everyone deserves these types of opportunities.

Meanwhile, in the sane world, findings show that “Widespread deployment of technologies that pull CO2 from industrial flues and ambient air would be much more expensive and damaging than a worldwide switch to electricity and heat from renewable sources” sustainability.stanford.edu/news/opportu...

Thank you to Senate Democrats for unifying in opposition to Republicans’ scheme to punish working families. Democrats played procedural hardball and spent hours on the floor debating overnight, filing close to 100 amendments and forcing votes on 23 of them.

The mountains are underwater and fascism is on the rise, so I recommend going ahead and getting that divorce you've been thinking about.

Things hurting the US economy: -mass layoffs of federal workers -funding cuts to every federal dept -corporate layoffs -measles and tuberculosis outbreaks -high flu rates -$8/dozen eggs -new tariffs raising the cost of everything -Canada boycotts US travel and goods -concerns about airplane safety

Universities really need to pay attention to this. It's not just about the indirects and frozen funds. If these layoffs continue, which by all signs are continuing and going well beyond probationary employees, ***these agencies will not be functional, including NIH, CDC, and NSF***

🚨 JOB ALERT: Research Director, Center for Science & Democracy at @ucsusa.bsky.social. The work of this role in this moment where science is under attack is so important right now!

Our paper on particle associated nitrogen fixation in the global ocean now came out. So nice to see it out. Congrats Subhendu, Ken and Ago www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

The best part about Thursday night is a new episode of severance. The worst part of Thursday night is the end credits of severance.

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

Stop with the plane crashes please.
