I think it’s not helpful to repeat claims that the administration is working on eliminating “DEIA” as though it’s some kind of corporate strategy; just say explicitly that they’re trying to eliminate diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, and explain how.

We remember Steve Irwin on what would've been his 63rd birthday: 🇦🇺🐊

Let me take this format for a spin

Maine's governor Janet T. Mills yesterday defied Trump to his face. This is the leadership we need from our politicians now. "In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it..." Her full statement is here: www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

👏👏👏👏👏 A reminder that publication ethics are a thing, and that journal editors play an important role in maintaining scientific integrity

Oh wow, what a crazy random happenstance.

Good morning friends! Sending you all a big hug on this Friday morning. Today I will be trying to remember that even small acts of kindness and love matter—and to do a few.

Spectrogram of a bit of wheezy laughter. I was *not* prepared for the pitch trace (in blue) that this generated! With @marinanc.bsky.social

This is SO important. We have to make arguments clear and concise for the public. Save the caveats and asterisks for the colloquium. And yes, your colleagues might call you unserious and be mean to you about it; remember no one is listening to them.

I saw this from ICA this morning.

The notion that Trump's "I'm king" tweet is "just trolling" or "a joke" presents an opportunity to recreate my just-joking thread (porting it over from the Bad Place): 1. I wrote my PhD dissertation on the social function of humor (in literature & film) and here's the thing about "just joking."

Yea.

LLMs are great if all you want is write mediocre prose and think mediocre thoughts

If you take the proportion of 83 children dying in American Samoa as a result of RFK Jr. advising them to stop administering the MMR vaccine and apply it to the US, over 600,000 people would die.

Spotted: Singular they used in the wild to protect the anonymity of a Republican congressperson complaining about Trump behind his back

Fascinating to see some of the original lines restored in the director's cut of Jurassic Park #emca

It is horrifying watching the government erase a demographic in real time and most people just not really caring.

This is brilliant @deevybee.bsky.social: (PS editors -- please stop doing this!)

The cop fund suing Target is 🤌🏾

Tank commanders in tianamen at least had the mercy to stop.

For all the issues I have with wizards and hasbro they have a clear commitment to justice and inclusion right now. It's by no means perfect, but it's a darn sight better than many

📣 DEAR COLLEAGUE LETTERS ARE NON-BINDING GUIDANCE LETTERS. You cannot change what is considered illegal discrimination under federal law through non binding guidance.

Black scholars argued this incessantly after the war. Britain killed 10’s of millions of Indians, Belgium enslaved and genocided the Congo, France slaughtered its Algerian subjects. Nazi Germany was the logical extension of US and European colonialism, not an aberration.

The point is to create a backlog, in order to illegally detain people with no due process

I could not agree more. And if university administrators understood this applies to them as well, academic institutions would be in a much better position to push back.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.

“If Trump is denying access to outlets that refuse to lick his boots, then any media outlet that has access is compromised. Journalists who want to be worthy of the name have a moral obligation to follow the AP’s example in enraging the toddler in chief.“

See here's how to do a headline. fortune.com/2025/02/13/e...

As a foreigner in the US it kind of feels like a bunch of people people who've been sleeping are now starting to wake up.
