This is a great point: scientific societies should be acting like this is an abnormal time too. That will give the press cover to write about it that way, which they don’t have now. AAAS could replace its front webpage with “CRISIS AT NIH” for example. @holdenthorp.bsky.social

Institutions complying in advance. I'm faculty at Georgia Tech and email instructing faculty to scrub websites of verboten terms such as "equality" and "justice". Please share widely, I want this cowardice noticed.

My hunch is that a lot of people in the coming years are going to find national politics so depressing that there will be a market for political conversation that is focused more on local problems and solutions. Out of those local conversations might emerge good ideas for a better path forward.
