#Oakland ! there is a bunch of mayoral debates coming up for a very important election! 🧵 with each of them below... #mayor #debate #localpolitics

@aoc @sanders.senate.gov is the Feb 28 buying boycott a good idea?

hallucinations of the natural, stupid variety: just make stuff up!

I rarely dunk, but this is exactly why @mjcrockett.bsky.social and I write about /illusions/ of understanding in our paper about AI and knowledge production.

This is very bad news for #Oakland's supervision of its #Police . Oakland City Council needs to appreciate that spending $$ on this function saves the city trauma and $$. just like the federal gutting of its watchdogs, we cannot monitor without these staff paid to look.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty.

How to get 146% return on investment? The NIH. That's just the economic benefit. Biomedical research promotes human health.

If the White House decides it can defy the will of the courts, then the people must defy the will of the White House.

Dispatch from Silicon Valley: the narrative of "AI as Oracle" is everywhere. Writing in Nature Machine Intelligence, I updated the Delphic maxims to help us cut through the hype: 1. Know thy training data 2. Nothing in excess 3. Certainty brings ruin www.crockettlab.org/s/s42256-024...

Barbara Kingsolver has done something amazing (in addition to being a great writer). I found Demon Copperhead very hard to read because of the realities of the opioid epidemic. Now the book's royalties (it's a bestseller) will fund a rehab centre

A thing to understand here is that Wired + Teen Vogue is Condé Nast — this is the Newhouse family being basically the only good billionaire publishers. Other than them, it’s the indies of the new alt media and stalwarts like ProPublica and then basically crickets.

Zeynep Tufekci does it again: AI is not like nuclear weapons, DeepSeek is not Sputnik “it’s time to start thinking clearly about how corporations and governments could use the A.I. ... to entrench their dominance, erode our rights, worsen inequality.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/05/o...

Oakland’s tiny government watchdog sparked an FBI investigation. Why is it neglected?

The only upside I can think of #Trump saying "X has no alternative right now" where X happens to be Palestinians this minute is that it will PULL TOGETHER all the various X's, peoples and institutions, to show what a lack of imagination he has. We'll give you alternatives! You won't like them!

I wish Mr. Martin the very best as the new DNC Chair, and I’m rooting for his success. I also think an enormous opportunity was missed by DNC membership in passing over Ben Wikler.

MapQuest is NOT renaming the Gulf of Mexico. Our maps are like grandma's Thanksgiving recipes — once they're printed, they're not changing. The Gulf of Mexico stays put on MapQuest.

There is no such thing as “leaking” information about Zuckerberg. He does not believe in control or consent over information being shared by others. He does not believe in the idea of social norms for interpersonal interactions based on respect or trust. There can’t be any transgression or betrayal.

When I wrote 18F's Agile budgeting guide, the agency comms shop's Trumpians refused to let me publish it without making changes. I made the changes but, unbeknownst to them, I tracked them on GitHub, and logged every change as having been ordered by the comms team. github.com/18F/technolo...

In times of crisis, states have few tools to fight misinformation stateline.org/2025/01/23/i...

The structural reason big tech and major VCs are funding AI to such a degree is to undermine labor, period. It is no accident that the single most effective task genAI does is coding — the highest paid, most powerful job in tech. It *is* possible to build worker-owned/centric, consensual AI, though.

. . . not gonna hold ya. . . probably woulda been better (and safer) for her to go to a sex party. lol

Fantastic essay.

Super excited for Rudy and the team.

This is hilarious. I'm deep in X/Twitter's terms of service in the section about recommender systems (don't ask why) There is a helpful diagram about the signals X/Twitter uses to personalise account recommendations. The top account to follow in said diagram is (you guessed it)... Elon.

@oaklandside.bsky.social I'm generally fine with your "sponsored" stories, but boosting oaklandside.org/2025/01/22/s..., because Oakland's Dept of Economic and Workforce Devp payed you to do so, and without any editorial comment regarding what this says about Oakland POLICE funding is ... WTF?!

Huh. For better or for worse, one of the most useful things on old Twitter was being able to complain about something and have the company respond to you. Hadn't seen that as much here on Bluesky, but... perhaps it's changing!

Nature is the OG innovator. “Ecological restoration is human-led, nature-enabled. Us deciding what we want nature to do … whereas rewilding is more of an eco-centric approach which is nature-led and human-enabled.”

I don't believe he died. I believe he's alive, just differently, because he's one of the people who, jah bless, keep going forever through time. No I won't be taking questions.

Welp. Apple snuck something dirty in our phones last night. Settings > Apps > (pick an app) > Siri > Learn From this App TOGGLE OFF. You have to go through each app. My garage app, my BANKING APPS, others had that turned on automatically. 😡
