I watched a tear down of an Echo speaker long time ago, the mute button seems to actually, electrically disable the mics, so probably muting it is enough. In any case, if you find it not being sufficient, please let me know 🪛

Please note that there is not such a backdoor. Investigate further and you'll find out #TarLogic is just spreading panic by greatly exaggerating their finding to try to catch the media attention and sell their "specialised services" to scared CEO's.

Probably the"simplest" solution would be a small microcontroller charlieplexing the matrix and forwarding data to the next digit.
But if you really want to avoid MCUs, maybe you can look at something like the LV8153.

If I were a U.S. citizen, I’d use these four years to prepare for what comes next. Musk is coming, and he’ll make Trump look like a joke.

Gracias

Here are all the parts and values I've managed to identify so far. I'm having trouble to identify the bottom 4 parts, they may even be unrelated...
Unfortunately, not having the actual PCB with me makes very difficult to fully reverse engineer it, especially around the package sizes.

I'll see if I can find a high resolution picture of the PCB and I'll try to make a diagram with my best guess on how it could be populated

The footprint for the DC/DC IC converter seems to match the pin-out for the AP3441SHE-7B, that is the one used in the IO Board
