Swedish newspaper (SvD) "Swedes behind Edmonton's fightback" (actually "vändning"). Oddly, the Finnish newspapers seem to think that a Finn [two assists] was behind the fightback.

@maxrushden.bsky.social One reason your - otherwise good - joke "What about Anthony Niemi?" failed to hit was that you got the name wrong. The Finnish former goalkeeper is Antti Niemi. (Yes, I've also checked talksport and the original quote had the correct name.) As for me, I thought it must

Finnish TV reported in a biased way on a meeting where all political parties were informed about racism. First, the normal interview with the prime minister. But then, instead of (as usual) interviewing representatives of (say) three political parties, they decided to interview only PS politicians

I get that Inter Milan are Inter and thus A.C. Milan can be referred to as Milan. However, Simon Kuper in FT Weekend writing from Paris about PSG, after mentioning Real Madrid then lists the top three in match-day revenues as Madrid, PSG and Arsenal. I doubt that Atlético Madrid supporters approve

FT Weekend has 1 1/2 pages on Europe's historical relationship with the US. After mentioning "the latest trends in music" and referring to a heavy-handed Soviet alternative, the article says "Supraphon recordings of Tchaikovsky were first rate but lacked the appeal of Elvis." Supraphon was Czech!

HBL(performing at the highest level [?]) has a long article about the people selected for two WC qualification matches where the headline is that (Roman) Eremenko (38) has been selected. They include a list of the players selected with their clubs. The list *does not* include Eremenko!

Fox Business: (on Finland) "A tradition of celebrating failure, plus the freezing weather that blankets this Nordic nation for much of the year, are among the unlikely key ingredients to its tech success." Ignore "a tradition of celebrating failure" which is not what I've seen here. Success, yes.

Finnish State TV showed none of the four European football club finals. The UEFA.com site provided a list of which TV stations per country were showing a match. The Women's Champions League was the easiest - DAZN as usual. For Europa League (and later Confernce League) the solution was Belgian TV

FCBayern.com: (1/2) "When I received the request, I didn’t have to think twice. I’ve been a Bayern fan since childhood; my first jersey was from Thomas Müller, and my bed linen was from Luca Toni . It was always my big dream to one day play for my favorite club. I can hardly wait to get started ...

The "Club World Cup" is a strange competition with teams representing different parts of the world chosen in an odd way. So Messi's Inter Miami even though they are not number 1 in the US. No Liverpool; no Barcelona and not even the best team from Auckland (NZ). However, the money is fantastic.

The FT today has letter from "David Crouch, Gothenburg, Sweden" saying the the FT was wrong to write about "Sweden... overflowing with billionaires". It turns out that the same David Crouch moved to Sweden in 2013 to write about Sweden for *the FT"! One way to get a letter published!

Nice quote from The Athletic after Manchester United were booed in Kuala Lumpur after losing 1-0 to an Asean side. "You can’t say they haven’t given the global fanbase in Malaysia an authentic experience of watching Manchester United."

The New York Times newsletter noted today that the Liverpool police had "quickly announced that a driver who rammed his vehicle into a crowd was a white British man" (actual quote [BBC] "a 53 year old white man from Liverpool"). They correctly note that this was "to stop the spread of rumours".

HBL: (about Real Madrid, my translation) "...every loss is analysed down to macro level of media, fans and uncles who meet for their cortados and morning fag at the local bar." It could only be written by Jonas von Wendt, who adds colour to all his long articles.

HBL: "Among the top ten in the university's[Swiss IMD] list [of electric cars] are two European car companies, Volkswagen and Ford." Yes, Ford makes cars in Europe, but that doesn't make it a European company!

PC Pro magazine: "He cited the example of a PC case manufacturer that might previously have sold units for $20, but would now have to push that price up to at least $30 as a consequence of the tariffs. “That’s going to be up to a third increase straight off the bat for American customers..."

BBC after the end of the F1 race in Monaco. "It's a dream," Norris says on the team radio." Good that he didn't say "a dream come true" because I would have burst out laughing as that is what Harry Kane is supposed to say - according to the "Dead Ringers" radio program - in response to everything.

I'll confess I thought was a mistake when Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that Harvard was founded in 1636. [I thought:"Was there a USA then?"] Well not as today, but there was a Massachusetts. See the Wikipedia article on Harvard for its early history.

I just saw a short item in The Observer that a Chicago newspaper had used AI to create a summer reading list. Of the fifteen books on the list, TEN did not exist.

Swiss NZZ wrote about Trump's three wishes - a new Air Force One (tick); the Annection of Greenland (*); and an iPhone "Made in America " (being pushed [tariff threat]). (*) Here it used (about the current status) the unfortunate phrase "liegt auf Eis". Not clever but certainly groanworthy.

@maxrushden.bsky.social Just watched the Women's Champions League final. Apparently it is allowed in Arsenal to have a genuine centre-forward, provided you don't play them from the start. Arteta, please note.

I don't (much) mind standard (*) adverts between podcast sections (preferably in the language of the podcast) but get annoyed at UK podcasts starting to have their presenters read scripts about how they use X. The worst thing, however, is adverts for Founder/Premium Members etc. [I.e. (imo) scams.]
