I wrote a letter to the local paper regarding our Senator's assertion that people haven't been calling him with concerns about the federal mess. They published it, but seem to have attributed it to someone else.

TCUs do amazing work. Please advocate for them.

If you're looking for some more #Chess and #scicomm, go check out the blog post by Alex Knopps (a grad student in our dept. at NDSU who I co-advise) about his @chessable.com research award! www.chess.com/blog/Chessab...

@bjbalas.bsky.social have you seen this?! Amazing!!

My colleagues in Biology at NDSU wrote a great letter to our local paper in response to the legislature's consideration of a bill to include Intelligent Design in ND classrooms: www.inforum.com/opinion/lett...

Beautiful people out protesting the erasure of trans folks from the Stonewall monument website.

They also voted down an extreme personhood bill yesterday. Still plenty of weird and scary stuff on the docket in our state leg, but in a deep red state, you take the wins you can get. www.inforum.com/news/north-d...

One of the grants on Cruz's list provides $15 million a year for up to 10 years for a massive collaborative project based at NDSU to improve resilience in our food production systems. Both of our (R) senators praised it effusively when it was awarded.

If your boss or company tells you to do something unethical: don't say yes. Make them write it down.

If you're an NSF PI like me, you might be wondering: Will my grant be suspended or terminated next week? A few key things to know: First off, remember that NSF is **congressionally mandated** to evaluate broader impacts. And laws like CHIPS and Science supersede EOs. But also... 🧵 thread

The kiddo has a new post on her blog (now over at Buttondown) about war, fearmongering and horror movies. Enjoy! buttondown.com/blaisebalas/...

A special Bluetorial about one of my mentors Ruth Kirschstein Among Ruth Kirschstein’s many contributions to American science was the development and expansion of programs intended to increase participation of people from groups underrepresented in biomedical research.

If you don't want RFK Jr. to kill your kids, call your senators again and tell them to vote no on his nomination. Do it if they're Democrats or Republicans. And if they're Dems, tell them to cut the crap: no more unanimous consent, and no more selling out America to Trump. Find your senators here:

Please, please listen, I am literally begging you: I'm a healthcare lawyer who is alive because of Medicaid. I just came from Hill meetings about Medicaid. I'm very plugged into "the groups" — if you're covered by Medicaid, do not cancel anything medical because of the OMB mess.

Prof. Schneider was the first instructor I ever had to record and share his lectures, which was great, but audio only. In the mp3-player-on-shuffle age, this meant that you had to be careful about directories or your sick late 90s/early 00s beats would be interrupted by a neuroscience lecture.

Hey All: Google is pulling the "automatically on for anyone over 18" bullshit with Gemini that the Dropbox did for its AI, but I can't afford to ditch Google Drive/Docs/Workspace. If you have a personal Google Account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off...

My teenager just showed her friends the Twin Peaks pilot on the big screen for her birthday. Minds were blown. (And paraphrased quotes were censored because... North Dakota.) Farewell, Mr. Lynch. Thanks for keeping it surreal.

For the record, our kid is anti-ChatGPT as well, which is how we found out that there was an assignment that instructed students to use it "as a creative partner." 🤮

Ann (@anntelnaes.bsky.social) is absolutely brilliant, and while her words here are scathing, they are not inflammatory. they're just spot-fucking-on. what a huge loss for the Post. anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

Yesterday, we lost William Labov, a foundational figure in sociolinguistics. In his Abralin Talk, Labov reflected on a lifetime of scholarship that has mentored generations and advanced the pursuit of social equity through linguistics.

I'll choose to believe that, like many of the preschoolers I talk to about such things, those 41% had several favorites and didn't want to pick just one. (Mine is the triceratops with stegosaurus as a close second.)

Bill Labov made it possible for John Rickford and therefore Renee Blake and therefore me, to have a rich life in linguistics. He knew that Black students and speakers had so much to contribute. We will forever owe him a debt of gratitude for his contributions to the field, but also to all of us ❤️
