Thanks for the suggestion!

For the first time in my life I'm starting to think seriously about making preparations for significant crises. I'd be interested.

I miss Mad Magazine.

I didn't find it creepy. It was somber.

Speaking of dusk, and Alcatraz, have you taken the night tour of Alcatraz? I *highly* recommend it. And I speak as someone who's taken the day tour several times, and the night tour once.

I would hope that some MAGA members would distance themselves from the cult when they, or their immediate family, are harmed. It's always seemed to me that many MAGA members took delight in other people's pain, not their own, or their own family's.

It probably seems like I'm trying to start a debate, and I'm not. I'm just having doubts that social media is, on the whole, a benefit to society. Do you know of any trustworthy studies that answer this question? I enjoy your posts. Stay well.

I understand that social media depends on section 230. What I'm less clear on is whether or not social media is, on the net, a social good.

Someone needs to see a picture of a "SOL 20".

Or stimulator, perhaps.

Understood, do you think that social media has been, on the net, a social good?

This won't satisfy you, but the only reason that would benefit the consumer is to get software updates to replace the sloppy software it shipped with. I assume the wifi connection benefits the company by providing detailed usage data, and perhaps surveillance data.

Their motto was "move fast and break things". That motto didn't age well, and TBH was stupid to begin with.

In my experience, Meta is not doing anywhere near enough to ensure that Facebook is a safe platform. It's a disgrace.

Thank you for sharing that powerful image, @rorycj.bsky.social . It's good to find you on Bluesky. I hope you are doing well. I always enjoyed your BBC work, which I listened to on iPlayer. Stay well!

It did seem like the manufactured confrontations in reality TV. But I don't watch a lot of reality TV.

The 250 attendees of that event got a powerful message from his office when his staff member no showed.

I've had OK results with Brother, but they're not great either.

The phrase "I had no other option" has become a red flag for me. That driver was surrounded by other options. Such as going somewhere else. Or waiting. Or going home. Another option would be to not draw attention to the moral crime by not posting about it. The driver passed on that option as well.

Thanks for clarifying. As a science believer I'm horrified by the defending of research.

I currently subscribe to the Washington Post and the NYT. I'm completely willing to drop those subscriptions and subscribe to a better national newspapers. But which ones?

I have to block one or two of them every day.

I enjoyed the article. However, I'm not sure that name-calling terms ("eggheads") are constructive in tech journalism. We have enough of that from political demagogues. Keep up the good work.

Given that there are great open source alternatives for all the apps you mention, I'd argue that now is an even better time to be a computer user.

I agree, rendering news in "choose your own adventure" format is absurd. As a software developer, I would think that the very next step would be to specify one's political orientation in a profile, and have the website auto-generate content matching one's own bias.
