Hey, artists, in case you were wondering if your work matters: I'm a scientist working on climate change and biodiversity, and I would not be who I am today without The Lorax, The Secret of NIMH, Watership Down, The Last Unicorn, and The X-Files. I know I'm not alone. Thank you for all you do.

I think A LOT about what the plan is to keep afloat some of the most important cultural institutions in NY at a moment in time where the old philanthropy models are dead and never coming back

Taking things too far with the Oscars campaign for Conclave

had a thought that if apple were to release a traditional ipod it would sell like hotcakes

Smart

no the three staffers left at yosemite aren't yosemite sam, foghorn leghorn, and tasmanian devil. that isn't true

finally someone talking sense. thank you and go cats @rtraister.bsky.social nymag.com/intelligence...

Quite an exchange here between Judge Reyes and DOJ attorney on how "pronoun usage" affects military readiness.

i will become a total shill for whichever politician decides to become the joe mccarthy of rooting out silicon valley ideology and influence

Same same but different thought: it’s wild to look at how audience ecosystems have changed as early and high school educational systems have been gutted.

A+ Gulf of Mexico post:

I think I've found a way to articulate what bothers me about the trajectory of the modern tech industry (and to some extent... society). We are on this Earth to provide for each other. That's the "mission" of humanity as I see it. This is incompatible with what the tech industry seeks to do.

i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

A well known phenomenon in arts world is when you see a successful long term leader of a small company, theirs usually a wealthy parent or partner nearby (myself very much included)…

Beat em down is for everyone

Kendrick Lamar deserves to win the very first Nobel Hate Prize

Canada running an “America we love you but your boyfriend’s an ass” ad during the Super Bowl is the funniest possible response.

Hosted friends for a card writing party to send valentines to incarcerated LGBTQIA+ people through Black & Pink yesterday. Such a bright spot of community after a tough week and a great reminder to get a B&P penpal. You can do that or learn about their other wonderful work here: www.blackandpink.org

✨New Jersey✨

I’m sorry but this one honestly just cracked me the fuck up

If John Wick was a leadership Dem there would have only been one movie, about 15 minutes long, about a real sad guy with a dead wife and a dead dog, cut to black, roll credits

One thing I've thought about a lot over the past few days is we were told that Musk's effort involved myriad high-profile Silicon Valley names willing to forego salary in order to help revamp government and what we got was child soldiers.

Breaking News: The Brooklyn Museum will cut at least 10% of staff and have fewer exhibitions in response to a $10 million deficit.

Fun arts admin fact: sometimes when we say “let me ask legal and get back to you”, what we mean is “let me furiously Google and/or text the group chats to see if anyone has an answer because the idea of using another billable hour this week makes me physically ill.”

For the union makes us strong!

I’m positive we’ll rise to even dumber levels in the next two weeks

I can’t say this clearly enough: Fuck off, NCAA, and fuck off, NYT.

I'm starting to notice something. They’re flooding the zone, but we’re getting really good at swimming. It’s almost like we have muscle memory from the last time we had to do this.

Remember when they told us we were overreacting and no one was coming for our rights? Well, that crowd is real quiet right now.

i really love that chappel roan doesn’t shut up.

Inspiring to see hundreds turn out to protest NYU cutting off care to young trans people. Coming together to hold institutions accountable when they preemptively comply with fascist initiatives is a pretty good way to fight the overwhelm.

Does Chuck Schumer know he is the highest ranking democrat in the senate?

As an Aaron Sorkin hater and “West Wing” blamer, I am here for this take

I need Americans to hate this administration the way Kendrick hates Drake so they can actually stand a chance of surviving

Chappell Roan once again proving that it’s actually not that hard to speak out on behalf of marginalized communities.

I'm glad that America is doing real classic end of empire stuff. A king who is visibly losing his mind declaring a war based on a dream he had. Greedy courtiers feuding over access to the treasury. Some looks are timeless.

“Come From Away” is at best a mid-tier musical outside of its context, but in 2017 to unashamedly revel in a patriotism that was about connection, community, and relationships was revelatory. . . . (and also Jenn Colella could sing a song of direct insults at me and I’d applaud)

Trudeau's words hit me hard tonight. I was in Toronto (with many other American film journalists) on 9/11. I doubt those of us who were there will ever forget the kindness and fellowship we were shown by everyone we encountered. It's horrific that when Canadians look at America, they now see Trump.

Elon Musk keeps talking about saving taxpayers a few billion and government efficiency but the simplest and most efficient way for the government to recoup hundreds of billions all at once is to just take it from Elon Musk.

for @slate.bsky.social, I spoke with people impacted by Trump's ban on trans, nonbinary, intersex & gender-nonconforming Americans from obtaining passports that properly match their identities. “People like me are being defined out of existence."
