A blow by blow of what’s in the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which I’ll keep updating as we get budget scores. Also, Elon Musk apparently hates this bill again.

The sheer amount of news that in any other time in my life would have received several days of top of the hour coverage but now barely ranks a passing mention is, well, terrifying.

Gilead has announced that lenacapavir, the game-changing HIV prevention drug just approved by the FDA will cost $28,218 USD per person per year. Researchers say a generic version could be made for just $25 per person a year. Capitalism kills.

Genuine Question because I Do not understand… so if these men roll up in plain clothes and masks, grab a human being… even a child, and throw them in an unmarked vehicle I am just supposed to look the other way and say nothing ?? Ask Nothing ?

If you live in the United States, you are in greater jeopardy today than you were 6 months ago. So is your family. So are your friends & neighbors. Virtually all the important parts of the U.S. government created to protect us are being shut down, gutted, or marginalized. — @djrothkopf.bsky.social

They literally can't perform well on medical exams. They've done nothing that can be remotely accurately described as doing well on medical exams. At this point in time people who keep claiming that they can should be regarded as academic frauds. Your deliberate lies are hurting people.

So the guy who can singlehandedly set US tariffs on smartphones is launching his own US smartphone company do I have that right

And again, they were about 15-20 times as large as the April 2009 Tea Party protests, so I'll sit back and wait for 15-20 times as many stories from political pundits explaining that this was a decisive rebuke to the sitting president that Changes Everything.

Every member of the Congress needs to condemn this, and fast. Especially the Republican ones who have so far demonstrated nothing but cowardice and facism-adjacency when it comes to Trump. This is the time to stand up for democracy or else get the F out of this line of work.

Journalistic malpractice/incompetence to not point out clearly and up front that this directly violates a federal statute

EVERYBODY WATCH. ICE IS OUT OF CONTROL. Video of SEIU California’s President David Huerta getting assaulted & arrested during an ICE raid in the warehouse district of Downtown Los Angeles today. He’s an LA native, American citizen and labor leader. Don’t turn away.

This is actually the 7th person confirmed infected from one measles flier. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases that exists, and a lot of people in North America have it right now. People can be contagious days before developing any symptoms, and it can be spread simply through breathing.

Someone needs to take that poor toddler away from him.

“Three things made the US a rich and powerful nation: the rule of law, its science & innovation system, and openness to foreign talent. Remarkable how Trump has taken a sledgehammer to all three. No enemy of this country could do more.”

Reminder that, despite everything you were told & everyone believed, Joe Biden & Jerome Powell had basically solved the inflation problem & left us closer to target, in November 2024, than we’d been for 85% of the months since the Fed established a formal target in 2012: bsky.app/profile/mcop...

If you ever want to see a Trump supporter go insane, just casually mention he's never won an election against a man.

It’s very strange that this article on the staffing issues at Newark Airport doesn’t mention the fact that DOGE fired 400 FAA employees a few months ago, and union officials warned about exactly these kinds of shortages.

The. More. You. Know. 💫

Members of Congress were also there, but were not arrested. One reason why? It's literally illegal for DHS to bar any member of Congress from entering an immigration detention facility for the purposes of conducting oversight.

Some fantastic new legal scholarship from Prof. Michael Smith of St. Mary’s University School of Law. papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

I know, norms and all that, but the default Dem position should be: We think this is illegal but if the courts say you can do this then we are going to rip the guts out of the entire conservative movement. No more Heritage, FedSoc, etc. All of them lose their tax exempt status.

Who hid Americans during the 1979 hostage crisis? Canada. 🇨🇦 👊🏻

They are taking away our vaccines. Jay Bhattacharya is talking about eliminating mRNA vaccines. Meanwhile, RFK Jr. has managed to ratfuck the Novavax approval process.

The Republicans and Trump are laying out the groundwork to arrest or disappear journalists they see as a threat to the regime. Today will go down as one of the darkest days in democracy's history.

The crash in container ships arriving at the Port of Los Angeles (busiest in US) depicted in this graph should hit in a few weeks, which means lost business for truckers and probably some empty shelves in stores. Unless something big changes, the problems should become more apparent in the summer.

Really need journalists to push back on this bullshit. When they say this, just ask them point blank: "Are you saying that because one Latino man committed a murder, another Latino man deserves a life sentence? Do you think all Latino men interchangeable?"

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles. Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

Cats are notorious for hiding their pain, but luckily a lot of work has gone into deciphering their signals. For acute pain, researchers have developed the Feline Grimace Scale, a tool that looks at five different facial features. Read more here: ashinonyx.quarto.pub/my-website/n... 🧪

Fair assessment

So this interview lasted 2 hours so this “you’re scaring me” part might seem like an overreaction or fearmongering to someone without that context. There’s a lot of evidence to support my hypothesis that a potential H5N1 pandemic would be worse than COVID.

The head of our country’s government is in the early stages of consolidating total power. We must of course reject this, but that is not enough. We have to respond by creating a different and better kind of American politics than we have seen before.

🚨A U.S. born citizen was arrested in Florida for entering the state as an “unauthorized alien.” His mother and a community advocate showed his birth certificate during a hearing in Leon County. The judge said she had no authority to release him.

#2 hit me differently just now. It’s not just “stay calm,” tho we should. It’s “I’m in the moment. What’s the best choice now?” You can feel urgency w/o soul-draining terror. And that realization is the root of resistance and change.

When the “first hundred days” coverage starts, keep this in mind. FDR’s hundred days was a special session of Congress that passed legislation to enact his agenda. The story here is *not* how active the Trump administration’s been—it’s the unprecedented and unconstitutional consolidation of power.

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

One of hundreds of people abducted by ICE and sold to slavery in El Salvador was a 19 year old with no criminal record in the US or Venezuela and no tattoos of any kind. An ICE kidnapper who grabbed him outside his house said, "He's not the one." The other said, "Take him anyway." So they did.

Trump to Bukele: "Home-growns are next. The home-growns. You gotta build about five more places. It's not big enough."

I feel like “President of the United States suggests he would deport American citizens to prisons in El Salvador” should be fairly big news

And if you think Trump is planning at stopping at immigrants, think again. He just said “home-growns are next” and told Bukele he’s “gonna need to build about 5 more places.” Those “places” are concentration camps.

Don’t shut down Social Security offices to open concentration camps shouldn’t be the kind of thing you have to say out loud. But you absolutely have to tell all of you members of Congress this as often as you can stand it. (202) 224-3121 )
