Does anyone know what typeface this is? Structurally, it’s reminiscent of Goudy Old Style, but it has more extended serifs. Pages from ‘Kratkaya literaturnaya entsiklopediya. V 9 tomakh’ [i.e. Brief Literary Encyclopedia. In 9 volumes] (Sovetskaya entsiklopediya, 1962).

I think it will be fun to take photos of my Soviet chess sets using lenses that came out in the same decade as each set. But that would mean I need lenses from the ’30s to the ’80s—one for each decade. Damn, why can’t I pick up special interests that cost no money?

If I enjoy this Soviet lens, I also plan on getting one of the Industar-61 variants (produced from c. 1965 up until the 2000s), which was also called the ‘Eagle Eye’ because of how sharp it renders photos. Or maybe I will get the Volna-9 (1880s), which is said to be marginally sharper.

I figured it would be fun to take photos of my Soviet chess sets using a ’30s Soviet lens, so I ordered the Industar-10! The last two photos were taken with one of these lenses. I love the low contrast and nuanced tones. I’m so excited! It can also capture color, of course, but I prefer BW.
