PSA to other journalists who are slow on the uptake, iPhone now has a really quick and easy in-call recording feature which might change your life 📱✨

“More than half of people believe that non-violent female offenders should serve their sentence in the community instead of prison, rising to almost two-thirds for women with children” Not a fan of the violent/ non-violent distinction but this is still significant www.thetimes.com/article/5127...

Democracy dies in deference

FAO: environment/land/nature people in Scotland, I'm looking at guerilla rewilding for a possible story. If you want to chat (or if you know anything about the recent lynx/boar releases 👀) please get in touch to speak in total confidence!

New Observer article from @everebecca.bsky.social on the seasonal agricultural workers that weren't paid for hours worked last year & confusion around hourly vs piece pay. www.theguardian.com/global-devel... Worker Support Centre helped 99 workers with pay issues last year, here's what we found:

Exploited migrant farm workers in UK paid for picks, not hours. Workers not paid for in-work travel, time spent moving between workstations, team meetings, receiving instructions on equipment use. Employers violating employment rights. Need effective enforcement, not deregulation.

EXC: “There’s a significant risk… [coercive control] will play a part in some cases of assisted dying” In tomorrow’s Observer, domestic abuse experts told me victims had been ignored in the assisted dying bill which could be “misused as a tool for femicide”: www.theguardian.com/society/2025...

Every year thousands of workers come from overseas to pick fruit and veg on UK farms. But an organisation who supports them says they’re not being paid for all the hours they work - and payslips they shared with me show the same. My story in tomorrow’s Observer www.theguardian.com/global-devel...

Confession: I like it much better here obv (not to mention the moral argument) but I really thought X/witter would die a death and instead every time I look at it for work things are still popping off there and I get FOMO

Did you know the Glasgow climate creates prime pothole making conditions for over 1/4 of a year? And that same weather makes them very hard to fix... In today's read, Eve Livingston pounds the tarmac to see if the city can sort out its craters.

Such a treat to get this through my letterbox last week! One of my 2024 highlights was delivering a community journalism course for women affected by gambling, with my local magazine @greatergovanhill.com. This edition of the mag is home to all the stories participants produced on the course!

I’m not keen on the framing of this story, which veers at least close to blaming Rayner for not reporting the messages about herself in 2022. Let’s not pretend that for women reporting sexist abuse about yourself is some kind of risk free exercise www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

“William’s story was one of intergenerational trauma & of the lies Scotland tells itself about its treatment of its most vulnerable children.” My @londonreview.bsky.social longread on the Polmont suicides & our failing youth justice system is the culmination of 6 years’ work & means a lot to me.

Hello, does anyone here know a lot about court proceedings in Scotland and is up for having a quick background chat with me today please? 🙏

In belated ✨professional news✨, I said goodbye to freelancing a couple of weeks ago – am now in post as editor of an exciting new peer-led magazine at @scottishdrugsforum.bsky.social. Delighted about it. And still all ears for any relevant tips!

The High Court has ruled in my defamation case against Graham Linehan, finding that the statements he published were defamatory at common law. Huge thanks to my legal team for their support throughout this process. You can read the full judgment here: caselaw.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ewhc/kb/2025...

🚨I wrote a piece about Wes Streeting meeting with Bayswater Support Group, a parents group lobbying to pass legislation harming trans people, and promoting anti-trans conversion practices - for @wearequeeraf.com and with @sasha98.bsky.social www.wearequeeraf.com/revealed-str...

An interesting report on the new Sunday opening of the Stornoway Tesco by @everebecca.bsky.social, which makes the case that it's community and workers' leisure, not simply religion which is at stake. Stornoway is better understood as part of changes that have impacted all of us.

In today’s Observer I went to Stornoway on Lewis to talk to people about their local Tesco opening on Sundays. The row has been painted by some as extreme religion versus progress - but I found a more complicated story about community, tradition and civic pride: www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

‘We owe it to the thousands of children who have been killed to pause and open ourselves up to the fullness of the little lives that were snatched away.’ Goodbye to the slain children of Gaza. You were loved, you are remembered, you did not deserve it. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Every day we stray further from god’s light

I visited Glasgow's new safer drugs consumption facility, The Thistle, ahead of its long awaited opening:

Everyone knows someone that has had a UTI. Some people are suffering from these infections over and over again. Burning bladder pain that doesn’t go away… My latest for @TBIJ shows why antibiotic resistance is making these infections harder to treat:

As nice as it is to see you all full of energy and announcing new projects, I need some representation for those of us who have crawled into 2025 unwell, slow and uninspired. My year will be starting properly next week thank you 🙏
