“That’s what I thought!”
His smile broadened into a grin.
“That’s the most incredible grocery-bill hack EVER.”

“Likewise.”
He smiled.
“This might sound crazy, but I have to ask: If you take a bite of food and then shrink, does that bite of food shrink too? Or, if you take a bite while tiny and then grow larger, does that tiny bite get larger as well?”

“I’m on a mission to get to know new and interesting people, and you happen to meet the criteria.”

Synch shrugged in embarrassment.
“Nevermind. I took ‘Scott’s Files’ as meaning files 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 Scott, instead of 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 to Scott.”

“Looks like the two of you have a lot in common.”

“Damn; that’s rough. How does your ability work? What is Black Flame?”

“Holy crap; I’m so sorry!”
He shook his head sadly.
“Powers can be a curse;
especially when you’re still learning how they work.”

“Whoa; that was pretty cool! Are you a mutant too?”

“I couldn’t help but overhear you. What powers? What happened?”

“Heh!”
He shrugged.
“Who knows; might even be true.”

“Mamma Said Knock You Out?”
Synch smiled.
“It’s an oldie; a hip-hop tune by LL Cool J. It’s pretty great at getting you hyped up during workouts.”

“I think I’ve developed a secondary mutation, Doctor McCoy: The ability to make baked goods disappear. Mind if I test it out?” 😅

His mood was lifted by the confidence in the girl’s voice, and he felt a sense of relief.
“That would be great!”
He glanced around, unable to shake the feeling that something about the town seemed a bit ’off.’
“This might sound like a weird question, but where is Greendale? Are we in New York?”

Sliding a hand down his bald scalp, he uttered a nervous chuckle.
“The second one, I’m afraid. My destination was Central Park. In New York City.”
He glanced around, his apprehension hidden behind a perplexed smile.
“I’ve never even heard of a borough called Greendale.”

“Don’t beat yourself up. We want to believe our leaders are infallible, but sometimes, they let us down. Hell; I’ve recently had first-hand experience with it.”
He offered her a melancholy smile.
“By the way; my name’s Everett. Some folks also call me Synch.”

“Hell, some people WANT it. Others try to ignore it as long as they think it won’t affect them.”
He shrugged.
“I guess it’s up to the rest of us to keep pushing back. Make so much noise that they can’t ignore it anymore.”

He nodded.
“Part of the same process. The noose gets tightened so gradually, a lot of folks don’t even know it’s there until they get choked out.”

“Greendale?”
Synch donned a relaxed smile, an expression completely at odds with the confusion he found himself sinking into. Just seconds ago, he’d stepped through one of the remaining Krakoan portals; a doorway whose terminus was supposed to be in Central Park.
“I seem to be a little lost.”

He shook his head in sympathy.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to bring up any bad memories.”

He smiled.
“It’s hard to explain. When you’re looking at auras every day, you learn to recognize patterns. Some of those patterns are unique to Earth.”
He briefly closed his eyes, searching for a fitting analogy.
“It’s kind of like languages. I can read your aura, but it has a foreign accent.”

“I happen to be able to read the energy of other super-powered beings and sync with them to replicate those abilities. “
His eyes narrowed.
“There’s something funny about your aura, though. Let me guess: You’re from a different planet, right?”

He let slip a reluctant smile.
“Same. Not that I endorse robbing banks, of course.”
