After wiping out a huge part of the party's magic with a mages disjunction, the players suggested I might never do that again. The rogue lost 100k worth of items. 20 years later an AP I was running called for it, luckily someone counterspelled it.

Give them THE toys every kid wants. Mighty Thor Starter Kit, giant belt, ogre Gauntlets and hammer of thunderbolts. Everyone made a case why their character could use it. The clerics take when not casting could throw it for 4d6. The front liner got it in the end to swing twice per round.

One thing, I've run as a ruthless capitalist treasure keeper with share including item picks as a player, and run as GM over positively socialist player treasure distribution and never say anything as GM when treasure distribution evolves out of the character personalities organically.

I believe players used to roll off for treasure, when an item came up that more than one player wanted. I believe we did this at the table before MMOs created a similar rollover mechanic.

How do you split treasure in your games, everything equal shares as a portion of the total, do magic class items count against share? Does everyone pick an item and sell the rest and split the proceeds? Does the party fund pay for healing before the split?
