That being said, Patreon remains the best way to support us if you're able to manage a monthly commitment—you get lots of special episodes, and some new special perks this spring:

ohhhh yes—for the most part, I (Elizabeth) can't engage with those at all, after what I and esp some mutuals directly experienced in 2014. I actually wouldn't even talk about TJLC explicitly on the air until a couple of years ago (even now I'm like, 'is it safe to write those letters out' lol)

yeah that absolutely makes sense! And you have that accountability to the older people who are still in the fandom—not some abstracted "ancient history" to gawk at.

re: Fansplaining specifically, Flourish has discussed on-air how weird/upsetting it's been to see their experiences from early HP fandom shenanigans twisted and turned into sort of rubbernecking gossip fodder under the guise of "fandom history". And like, Flourish is extremely still around! 😅

Yeah! I def think you can write respectfully about fandom history you don't have a direct living connection to (see: most historians of any subject lol) but a lot of "fandom history" content often feels gossipy and disrespectful of the people involved in incidents who are still around/in fandom.

one thing I loved editing this is Lena is engaging with the history *while* being in the fandom—cataloguing zines and going to cons with folks who were there back then. So often younger fans forget this isn't ancient history! And treat it as a story rather than something you can actively connect to.

yeah that makes total sense :-/ so frustrating that they can be so heavy handed just out of sheer resource difference.

INTERESTING. I bet they are now since it's everywhere on Etsy. (Also definitely seems like they don't have a case on that symbol—do you have the bandwidth to fight them? Or is it not worth risking legal pressure?)

that *is* interesting—do you have other HP art/merch up currently that's evaded takedowns? (some slash ships iirc...) I've been wondering with the for-profit Dramione explosion recently where they were going to start drawing the lines.

Fanfiction has always existed in the margins of culture: deeply entrenched in fandom, but a grey area in the publishing and the mainstream. @elizabethminkel.bsky.social talks about it "The Endless Appetite for Fanfiction":

Thanks again to all our incredible writers this year. We've got one more piece coming out in the week between Christmas and New Year's, and then that'll be a wrap on 2024!

@gavia.bsky.social is *extremely* quotable haha, this passage is one of many worth highlighting:
