Thankful to have a team to distribute work to, vs trying to shoulder this all solo. Good collaborative approach to identifying build and deploy changes we wanted to make based on lessons from development and early access so far. Each person working on a piece that will improve the overall setup.

If you have paid subscriptions on Substack, you are asking your readers to take a portion of their money to fund racist, antisemitic, and anti-trans speech. Substack takes ten percent of people’s revenue and then gives it to people like Bari Weiss who said Nazi salutes aren’t really Nazi salutes.

Curious to see what Nintendo does for the Switch to Switch 2 data transfer. The Wii to WiiU process did this: youtu.be/iZDsHBq9nAY?...

It continues to be strange building games during yet another attempted coup.

Today was a reminder that even the smallest change to a CI system can lead to some unintended consequences. The work to refine and harden the critical paths continues, with some solid small but impactful time reductions in certain areas recently.

30 million users, still just one centralized app and server.

I'll give you an idea where we're at. I get hate pretty much all the time for not calling for Kurtzman's job, I'm used to it at this stage. But what I won't and will never tolerate are the death threats against him I've had to delete from the comments. I don't know Alex Kurtzman but 1/4

Absolutely unacceptable for people to escalate to death threats against a person because they didn’t like a show, movie, game, song, book, or any other form of entertainment. Toxic parts of fandoms need to be hard rejected, thank you to those fighting back against it.

Every queer person at Meta should unionize and go on strike. They wouldn’t have a company if it wasn’t for queer developed tech in their stack, from the hardware to the software and design.

Hoping folks in the LA region are staying safe through this wind storm and associated fires around the area. Rough news all day today and getting a bit worse going into the night 😦

I came to bsky to get away from twitter and facebook and now everyone is posting on bsky about facebook and how it's like twitter because Bad Man Bad Decisions. You're not wrong but, uh, How about that cool game you're working on?! That pixel thing you were pixeling, yeah! More about that ♥

Unexpected gamedev work from home issue: consistently having to keep track of what controllers are tied to development systems vs my personal equipment. Especially when I mindlessly mix them up when pacing to think through an issue.

One more thing is an Xbox

Getting some Gaikai flashbacks seeing the Xbox and LG news. Game streaming continues to grow since the early days, glad to see it. www.engadget.com/2012-07-05-g...

Beautiful service at the Carter Center. Rest in peace Jimmy.

New Years 2025, I’m tinkering with a local proxy for game caching as a way to relax 😂 Discovered Comcast runs their own cache for Steam, have seen my proxy pull a few chunks from theirs mixed in with Valve’s systems.

At times I’m thankful for the bad UX on the mobile app, keeps my engagement low and my time focused on other things.

Part of Christmas Eve here was watching the Lower Decks series finale. Such a great show, and very much amused at Paul Tompkins dressing up like this in the crew video from The Ready Room.

Watching the Rifftrax cover The Star Wars Holiday Special, and it including all the CBS national commercials from 1978 is great. Happy Life Day Eve!

“We have these text strings” *nods* “And they go into tables” *nods* “Next they get converted to a proprietary binary uasset, but there’s a diff tool!” *hrm, okay* “Oh and the proprietary uasset diff tool won’t show string table diffs” *Wat?*

Automation calling other automation is important and tricky to get right Debugging a build issue today took longer due to the assumption the automated part was working correctly. Turns out it was accidentally crossing the streams so to speak. A key parameter wasn’t jumping the gap between the sides

Disappointed to see The Game Awards potentially advertising an AI game at an award show that is supposed to be celebrating creators, devs and actors - all of whom are currently fighting for protections and rights against this kind of nonsense.

Today we, a majority of video game workers at ZeniMax Online Studios and the workers behind ESO, are proud to announce the launch of our union with @cwaunion.bsky.social! ✊

Inclusive games are fine. Any “gamer” seeking to debate this for clout, clicks, or other silly reasons gets a block. Stand up against hate, instead of turning it to a debate.

Thirty years later I’m still surprised Nintendo dropped the ball on the CD add-on for the Super Nintendo after years of hype, and left the door open for Sony to take that work to launch the PlayStation.

This morning, silent hill level fog This afternoon, sunny This evening, silent hill level fog Ahh, Thanksgiving in the Pacific Northwest 🦃

United we stand, divided we fall.

This massive review doesn't once mention that it's funded by Palmer Luckey, and it's not an oversight, considering the author (and site owner) is ignoring comments about it. This is the same author who gave Tommy Tallarico a big fluff piece to promote his Amico scam. I'm detecting a pattern.

Me: Working with cloud resources heads down for two days Comcast: Perfect time to work on our network and create some outages both planned and unplanned! Me: 🙃

Pretty impressed by the performance from this tiny M4 Pro Mac Mini. Especially when it’s hitting 60FPS with a UE5 game running through both Rosetta translation and Whiskey Wine at 1440p. Watching the evolution of ARM all these decades has been exciting to see it grow.

Downside of my position is the spam messages trying to get my team to buy something. Most I tend to toss into the Junk folder and ignore, but when one came in offering generative AI, well that one got a “remove me from your list, and any future email will be seen as a CAN-SPAM violation” reply.

We have to as an industry stop laying off entire teams over a single miss. I get that this is a business, but it needs to be a business focused on the long term goals. Keeping a team together through a miss is a team with a lot of learned lessons ready to knock the next one out of the park.

no matter what you do in games, no matter how successful or unsuccessful your game is: you are on the chopping block. the executives will sacrifice you to pad their wallets.

Was informed one of my passwords was leaked in a data breach and I should change it. I regret to inform Wizards of the Coast that their combination guest WiFi password and Magic The Gathering expansion block from 2015 is now widely known.

Working with a lot of creative folks is amusing for how quickly new memes pop up. Someone asked for perforce help, and now we have a new internal space “always has been” meme

I’ll admit, still a bit lost on this platform. What’s the difference between lists, feeds, and starter packs? Still haven’t sorted out what lists and feeds even do fully. Probably from not being that active here in the early days.

Time spent aligning on goals and quality levels is worth it in the long run, even if initially it seems like low priority work. Long term stability and sustainability comes from reducing noise and building habits after the early experimental days are past.

Early Access is going well, as has the reception from those playing it. Nearly one month live, with a great roadmap ahead. That coupled with the performance review and solid connection with my manager is helping lift anxieties past jobs instilled.
