To add to this; it is 100% possible to train local generative AI models ethically for artistic use. But that kind of use is not something that will get you millions in investor money. It’s not how you get news headlines. That’s why commercial GenAI sucks.

This paper by Bernstein on how often algorithm analysis fails, how to characterize this and how to mitigate it, is pretty frickin' good. The analysis is with emphasis on proofs of security. Would recommend. cr.yp.to/papers/eraa-...

it's crazy there hasn't been a SINGLE innovation in music distribution ever since they basically just got in the way and started stealing money

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

Yet another sports study supporting trans inclusion in women's sports. These are becoming harder and harder to ignore.

(Boosts encouraged!) Hi! 👋 I’m Kat. I’ve been a professional dev for over 15 years. I maintained the NPM CLI for 5 of those. I sat in TC39. I work at Microsoft. I’m self taught w/a film degree and no formal CS edu. Are you new to tech? What do you wish you could ask some1 like me? Literally AMA

New blog post: the monad tutorial of my dreams, and maybe of yours! A jargon-free, practical explanation of monads as a design pattern, using Rust and property-based testing as the vehicle

Feeling... rough. Lately.

History: “Eventually the incompetent fascists invariably lose power and then society recovers in a new and stronger way” Me: “Oh, cool, so what has to happen for the spell to be broken??” History: “mmmm…well, that part is less encouraging.”

hello cis friends this is what people mean by trans genocide if a type of person does not officially exist, then any harm against them cannot be measured or reported this headline change isn't even being caused by an executive order it's simply the NYT editors deciding we don't deserve to exist

The thing to realize is it's not just a coincidence. A movement which disregards children's bodily autonomy and which attempts to enforce shame and secrecy as a value, is going to inevitably attract abusers

Been thinking about this moment from a Bug's Life lately.

This is what actual decadence is, by the way. Pretending that diseases don't exist

Anyone knows if there is a way to run a thermal benchmark? The other day I cleaned my notebook's insides and did my best to use thermal paste appropriately, but I don't know if it's still getting the cooling it needs? I'd love to be able to run a "test suite" but for cooling, and know all is good

Stop advocating for trans people by referring to us as canaries in the coal mine. The whole point of the canary is that it's an acceptable sacrifice to protect the people who actually matter. We are not a *warning sign*. We are real people. Our lives and rights matter in and of themselves.

This video by @hankgreen.bsky.social covers why the Galilean moons are so amazing. I love Pluto too, but #Io, #Europa, #Ganymede and #Callisto are top tier Solar System objects. 🧪🔭 #Astronomy #Science #Geology #PlanetaryScience #Space Shoutout to the Europa Clipper: science.nasa.gov/mission/euro...

The current political reality with the US vs. everyone trade war heating up means that it is going to be difficult for open source developers to keep funding their work; so… If you use an open source piece of software, consider financially supporting it if you can.

Dickson was amazing. If you ever want to study parasitology or virology, go check out TWIP and TWIV. His understanding of his subject, curiosity for the world, and his empathetic and candid demeanor are forever present in those recordings. He will teach you and make you want to learn even more 💖
