Blenheim land at Bladon was blitzed with glyphosate ‘to eliminate blackgrass’ in 2013 but later a subsequent 3-year regenerative rotation eliminated it.

Thank goodness

I hope they will examine #BotleyWestSolar Farm proposal for its claim of 70% BNG -,apparently to be generated by bat and bird boxes in the ruined landscape.

Impressive @herdyshepherd.bsky.social at #ORFC this morning demanding gov support for sustainable farming systems to trap and sequester C and ensure farm succession.

Great review. I’m still asking myself if a soil microbiome might be a helpful pointer in exploring the living basis of ‘soil health’ - eg by analogy with the human gut microbiome.

In my experience developers’ claims to restore nature are not enforced. Local councils no longer include experts.

PSA for cat owners in the US: cats have been contracting H5N1 (bird flu). They are very susceptible to it and the fatality rate for cats is 67%. To avoid it: -keep your cats indoors. They can catch it from infected birds and mice. -do not feed them raw dairy -do not feed them raw meat

Reintro: I'm now in my final year and preparing to defend! I'd revamp this to: patterns of specificity in coral-algal mutualisms, and then what that means for their ecology and evolution. A lot of my work has since taken a turn into octocoral symbionts, plus some work in other Cnidarians 🧪 (🪸📷⬇️)

Thank you so much! And for the repost.

A Lego orrery!

Perverse... An online magazine that adds a healthy tang of strangeness to the poetry culture, inviting writers to contribute things we find ourselves surprised by, even as we write.

Such beautiful, interesting books!

🧵 Launched today! A Woodland Trust report explores how the Gvt should fund #NatureRecovery in England, focusing on the role of new nature markets, risks, & opportunities, highlighting the vital role of the public sector in driving change. @ecioxford.bsky.social www.naturerecovery.ox.ac.uk?p=2274

Excellent soil biology explanation unfolds from this QR code:

‘#Naturalhistory #GCSE on hold as qualification seen as ‘Tory initiative’, claims campaigner’ - as if engaging children with the wonder of their world is to do with petty politics.

Good news for nature recovery in Northumberland:

I'm giving my introductory talk at Oxford at the @oxmartinschool.bsky.social on Thursday 28th 12:00. I'll be talking about climate, energy, food, and weaving in some of our research as we go. Do join if you have the time: www.oxfordmartin.ox.ac.uk/events/towar...

Absolute fury at this: United Utilities refusing to disclose data about sewage it's releasing into Windermere, because it's "not in the public interest." Ditto data on ammonia checks from a UU Cunsey Beck plant; site of a 2022 mass fish-kill from pollution. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

The whole sorry business makes me as angry now as it did then.

Rather pleased that this 2006 review had 15 new reads this week #soilfungiwoodlandecosystem www.researchgate.net/publication/...

Here's a starter pack of people on here who I've found and who I know are excellent Science Communicators. Give them a follow: go.bsky.app/4SAvt2B

I’m looking for the Woodland Trust, especially the survey of ancient and veteran trees that I heard of today.

Might as well come out with it here on the samizdat site. I have a 500-ish page book on the carbon cycle over all of Earth and human history coming out next year. The cover looks like this. Will have more to say about it once I finally wrap it up soon and the publisher takes the bounty off my head.

Welcome all to BlueSky. Now please use it. I know that my own temptation to stay with twitter is primarily because of a collective action problem. If people are going to stay on here it needs to be active.

Looking forward to giving my lecture in Frankfurt next week, as part of the Senckenberg Distinguished Lecture Series there. I will be speaking about the effects of multiple, concurrent global change drivers on soils and ecosystems @sgn.one 🧪🦠

Can this be real? It is giving me ideas.
