It is quite weird and in many ways tremendously stupid.
A lot of the decisions were made in the 1700s and have never been updated because we have a political class that believes the founders some religious figures (despite the founders explicitly stating they weren’t) and won’t let things change.

I complained the same complaint to my partner when we got our first toaster oven...and I butter but don't jam or spread.
