In the UK, immigration health surcharge is between Β£700 - Β£1000 and that covers 12 months or it might be covered in travel insurance. Either way, it's cheap. π Emergency care is free.

Yeah. I used my Amigas for doing work too. SX32 powered CD32 with harddrive and canon bubble jet printer attached. ironically In USA the Amiga range weren't seen as much as gaming machines.

They blew the budget on Connection Machine servers. Very niche.

Norway was very tough.... harder than Normandy in some respects. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegi... The Germans occupied it.

Yeah man. A common theme in many British families. I bet with some digging archives could find out more. Is he still alive? My dad missed the war by two years but he served in the Navy w sailors who did in the Russian convoys. Lots of tales of trying to steam ice off the ships whilst being attacked.

Yeah. He's probably got a point then... Sad, he doesn't hear it from us. Slightly different perspective, from the Continental Europeans as he was liberating the continent, but still. I agree.

... Remembrance Sunday, either in a Church service or at the local Cenotaph. Whether they would talk about it is another thing. Check out your local one this November. Sadly fewer WW2 veterans about these days. Last year's D-Day was a big one. 80 years.

You've never met a British WW2 veteran? Probably an age thing as there's fewer of them now. I've met a few including my great uncle and friends of the family. The most common thing is they didn't like talking about it.. (this was in 80s and early 90s). The best opportunity to spot them would've been

Out of interest, which nationality is this Normandy veteran? The Americans often forget about the 3 British & Commonwealth (Canadian) beaches, largely thanks to media/film portrayals. I've been to Normandy and seen the mulberry harbour pieces still there. Very poignant and sobering..Thankyou Alliesπ«‘

Could be. My mum was Scottish. She never understood the need for separatism. I know Sean Connery used to bang on about it a lot. I'll have a chat with my aunt when I see her next week, see what she thinks. π

It's not going to happen. The next PM will say the same. It's just going to get ignored. It would be worse than Brexit. Turkeys voting for Christmas, but they already voted in 2014. If that vote had not happened there would be a slight chance. It's done.

I used to do that on a site I worked at. The site was a mile long, many different buildings. Lovely walks in the summer π. Always carry some papers/clipboard.

It was down massively. It's called the "defence industry". We need a bigger army, air force and Navy while we are at it. 3% by 2034 isn't far enough really.

I know it's a bit crap (Brexit crap) at the moment and there's Gammons, Right Wingers and nationalist - populist stuff in modern politics. I can understand Scots wanting to cut loose, but I think it's a pipe-dream.

I'm sure Scotland got ripped off a bit.... But they were on the bones of their arse financially thanks to that failed Colonial scheme.... I'm sure England took advantage, but ultimately the UK thrived and created the largest Empire the world has ever known. And Scots were "making bank" too.

I'm quite proud of all the Scottish accomplishments and inventions. Definitely made The UK better as a whole. Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalgliesh might not have come down to Liverpool if Scotland was separate. Cammell Laird's shipyard would've been called something different and not as good etc.

where i'm from...... we have benefited from Scottish industrialists (Ship Builders etc.), Football coaches & players. And it's been two way. Build a bridge and get over it. We are British. Anyway, i'm distantly related to one of those Scottish UK Prime Ministers..... Good luck in your Nationalism!

good. Thanks. It's just when Colonial stuff gets bandied around I like to point out the English did not have exclusivity on it. Many states in Europe was at it. The Yanks have done a bit of it too in the 19th Century but don't like admitting it. "Scotland as a Colony" isn't going to fly legally.

Scotland had it's own COLONIAL ambitions. The supreme irony is, it's what bankrupted her and led her to the Union in the first place.... www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Hi... . Anyway we're both British (legally) and that's that, but also Scottish & English respectively. My mother was from Perth.

i'm working currently (overtime) ... so haven't got the time. But the losing the Scottish Parliament was a negative of the Union and yet they have had a Parliament for the last 26 years, with lots of powers. So, that's at least one negative cancelled out is my point. I will have a read.
comment in response to

Well, they've got a Parliament now (since 1999) and they've been getting more and more powers back all the time..... they want more and more. I blame Jimmy Crankie and Salmon - obsessed they are/were. It's a good money spinner the old Nationalism stuff. I'm very cynical about it.

I think at the time it was very lucrative to have the union. Scotland was pretty down financially after the failure of the Darien (Colonial) scheme in Panama. Pretty sure a lot of Scottish nobility did quite well out of the union. Worth looking deeper into. There was much willingness I think.

comment in response to

Nonsense. Before the 1707 union between Scotland and England, Scotland established several colonial settlements, primarily in the Americas, including Nova Scotia, East Jersey, and New Caledonia.
Darien a failed attempt by the Scottish Company of Scotland to establish a colony in what is now Panama.

But Scotland isn't and has never been a Colony. Some Scottish people throughout history have been Colonial Administrators though. Think about that.

I don't like the way anti-Semitism (bad) gets conflated with Anti-Zionism... Utterly infuriating. The Anti Defamation League has pumped so much money into it.... They aren't the same thing. They'd love to change the definitions and in some cases people think they have.
