It's always interesting how game publishing and even game publishing through crowdfunding evolves during the years.
Margin has definitely opened a lot more options for publishers to experiment with more ambitious games.

There are always some extra costs (like credit card fees) even when you sell to your own website. But even though you're selling direct to your backers, Kickstarter takes 9%. Amazon takes even more.

Also, if your audience usually gets your games by backing them through Kickstarter, it might be just the way the prefer getting them rather than the traditional distribution.
