My ex had been raised areligious, and was horrified and bewildered when I would tell him things I had been taught as a child. And my upbringing wasn’t at all fundamentalist — these ideas are mainstream in American Christianity.

Keep in mind that everyone who wants this 100% believes that they are going to heaven whether they die peacefully in their sleep, or in a global apocalypse. They WANT the world to die with them. Some people’s inability to imagine the world without them in it manifests quite harmfully.

The people who believe this also believe that their name was written in the Book of Life the moment they accepted Christ as their lord and savior, and that nothing they ever do — short, perhaps, of renouncing their faith — can erase it. How fortunate for them!
