My ex had been raised areligious, and was horrified and bewildered when I would tell him things I had been taught as a child. And my upbringing wasn’t at all fundamentalist — these ideas are mainstream in American Christianity.

Keep in mind that everyone who wants this 100% believes that they are going to heaven whether they die peacefully in their sleep, or in a global apocalypse. They WANT the world to die with them.
Some people’s inability to imagine the world without them in it manifests quite harmfully.
