Anyone have any more news on no cost extensions being granted?

Firing probationary employees is senseless. Probationaries are: -New to their position -Make lower salaries -Recruited to bring in new talent -Far LESS likely to be dogmatic They're being fired because they have fewer protections. Not because this will improve government efficiency or cut costs.

It’s been buried in all the news today, but every scientist in the US should pay attention to this: Mike Lauer went out on a limb for us all, sending out a memo saying institutes should start awarding grants. And it looks like Trump/Musk fired him for that. 🧪

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

People who spend their careers writing NIH grants are the literal opposite of grifters. It is a soul-sucking, brutal process. The scientists don’t get rich when they get funded. Their salary doesn’t change. They do it for science. For patients. You know, to make 🇺🇸healthy.

I keep trying to tell people in Alabama why NIH grant are important, why the cuts are bad for people, jobs and communities. La-di-dah. Where the hell are UAB Pres. Ray Watts, Gov. Kay Ivey, business leaders, Big Mules with an interest? Have some guts about you. www.al.com/news/2025/02...

For a state like Alabama where there is very little state $$ in education this is devastating for the AL universities - for research, for the research people’s jobs, for college educ costs - it will be costly for the whole state.

By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!

Dear US scientists, We've been hearing a lot of questions of the form "Why aren't universities doing anything!? They need to speak out!" We can explain. It's bad news. We're on our own. But understanding why can help us all figure out our plan. Read along in thread 1/x 🧪

What's happening at #USAID is causing so much damage. The great reporters at @science.org explore some of that damage. www.science.org/content/arti...

RFK Jr. talks about vaccine science as if the alleged links between vaccines and autism haven't been disproven. @matthewherper.bsky.social walks you through the science Kennedy won't cite. www.statnews.com/2025/02/03/v...

@charlesgaba.com is a hero and downloaded CDC’s entire website. A small group of us has come together to preserve this critical resource and make it accessible to the scientific community. More to come. These data are public and they are ours. Deletion disobedience is one way to fight back.

Here is a gift link to this excellent article that paints a realistic picture of what a less vaccinated America will look like. There are ongoing measles outbreaks in Houston and Atlanta to large cities. CDC can't update on these. www.theatlantic.com/health/archi...

The Trump regime wants to “protect women” from pronouns in bio but not from cancer

We see you. WHO is grateful for the love 💙 and messages of support we received. We stand by you. #HealthForAll

CNN has now confirmed this. www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/h...

Clear and important explanation about how cancelling study sections at NIH can have a profound ripple effect - less research, worse health, and lost jobs. I honestly don’t know if I would feel better if they didn’t realize the impact of what they did or if they were fully aware of it.

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.

This is great news! Until the vaccine is available, if you are pregnant or thinking about being pregnant you can lower your risk of acquiring CMV (new or reinfection) and risk to fetus by avoiding saliva & urine from young children while pregnant. No sharing food, drink, & sloppy kisses w toddlers!

Intrauterine CMV transmission is a leading cause of birth defects worldwide, so developing a safe, effective CMV vaccine is a worldwide health goal. Sallie Permar et al. describe the challenges of CMV vaccine development and recent progress in this Review: https://www.jci.org/articles/view/182317

RIP President Carter. With his beloved Rosalynn again.

💥 My 2024 Mile Marker: The inside scoop on how America lost control of the Bird Flu, opening the door for another pandemic. "We're in a terrible situation" said @angierasmussen.bsky.social 🧵Here's how we got here & how to get out @kffhealthnews.bsky.social kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

US whooping cough cases soar, but public knowledge of contagious disease is low buff.ly/3VMLKxm Cases of whooping cough (Pertussis) surged 6x in the US in 2024. Most people do not realize that pertussis and whooping cough are the same disease or that vaccination can prevent it. #Medsky #IDsky 🛟

Indeed My own university, Duke, is the 4th largest recipient of NIH funding after Hopkins, UCSF, & the University of Pennsylvania It's so predictable that the guy who complained about being "silenced" wants to silence "woke" researchers; free speech for me not thee! www.forbes.com/sites/michae...

Mexican president understands the border unlike the incoming administration. The GOP administration isn't interested in truth or actually fixing the border.

Research supported by NIH has led more than 100 Nobel Prizes and has supported more than 99% of drugs approved by federal regulators from 2010 to 2019. But come January, NIH may face a wrecking ball nytimes.com/2024/12/01/h...

WHO and partners evacuated six patients - three children and three adults - and seven companions from #Gaza to #Jordan. Two patients will be further transferred to the United States, while 4 will remain in Jordan for specialised care.

The NIH is an engine of economic growth. Cutting funding to NIH will consequently cut economic growth and have long-lasting impacts on US competitiveness at the cutting edge of biomedical discovery

At our Georgia tree farm, I am looking at the sunset and hoping that together, we will survive the current American political insanity.
