Elon Musk recently posted on his site that another lawyer and I are “undermining civilization.” He goes on to ask if we suffered childhood trauma and concludes by suggesting we are suffering from “generational trauma.” This is my response. www.democracydocket.com/opinion/my-o...

Yeah I know people say anxiety is bad, but mine has just been collecting all the possible things that can go wrong so far. Once it has an exhaustive catalog of every possible mishap, it’ll move on to suggesting solutions and then you better watch out.

Calling it “artificial intelligence” is such an overplayed hand. “Simulated intelligence” would be far more accurate: it only seems intelligent to the outside observer, but its functioning in no way resembles actual acts of the intellect. But the fact is there’s no intelligence being deployed at all

“We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests.” -FDR, 1941

Repeating myself, but the idea of Trump & Musk as "masculine" remains bizarre. They're just the toxic and immature parts with none of the traditional "masculine" virtues. They're whiny, entitled, unreliable, dishonest, self-absorbed, never take responsibility, never put duty over self-interest, etc.

Instead of prosecuting the mayor of America’s largest city with the ample evidence that he took bribes from a foreign government, the Trump administration decided to leave him in office, and use the threat of charges to blackmail him into carrying out their agenda. And they did it all in the open.

I remember sitting in a pizza joint once in TX—so many folks from different backgrounds/cultures all sharing the same space, friendly, enjoying the same things, etc. I remember thinking how cool that was, one of the things I love about America. But that is the America Trump and his followers hate.

Nostalgic for the days when impulse control was admired.

Small government is not the same as limited government. In fact, there is an (imperfect) inverse relationship between the size of government and its ability to be limited effectively. Generally, the more power concentrated into the hands of fewer governmental agents, the more unlimited their power.

In my experience, conservative Christians tend to put undue emphasis on the prohibitions and “thou shalt nots” (in both the OT and NT), as though there’s any ambiguity that in both the old and new covenants, the law can be summed up as “Love God with all your heart; love your neighbor as yourself.”

“We must stop eating!” cried Toad as he ate another.

Today, we at Google have a new product: what if you could could ask an app a question? Oh, we do that already? Well, what if we were a little bit worse at it? What if we also sometimes gave you egregiously wrong information? And what if it cost a billion dollars? Still not interested? It's mandatory

MAGA morality: Put thousands of federal employees on leave, cut aid that sustains countless lives, demonize your opponents, and then enjoy the suffering of your enemies. But then - when one DOGE worker is fired for vicious racism -say, "Where's the grace and mercy in this country?"

a good part of me thinks that in addition to everything else, the reason they are scrubbing these stories is they do not want disadvantaged kids to believe they can aspire to anything other than their designated “black” or “hispanic” or “woman” job

I'm all for going after waste, fraud, and abuse. The Department of Defense spends $800+ billion a year. It's never passed a single audit. Ever. USAID was audited three months ago. Is Elon scared to lose all the defense contract money he pockets from the Pentagon?

I watched "The Matrix" and thought "Wow, what an incredible reflection on identity and the self, the impulse of human freedom, the need to liberate ourselves from technologies of control" whereas these Silicon Valley bros saw fields of human batteries and thought "yes, yes, let's actually do that."

fucking hell abcnews.go.com/Politics/liv...

Still waiting for Janelle Monaé to hit their folkie era and do an album of duets with Joan Armatrading tho

In 2016 the NYT ran multiple front page stories page about the grave national security risk of Hillary Clinton's server. Today's front page, and nary a mention of the successful "plutocratic coup" (said by a sitting House member) or "constitutional crisis (said by a sitting Senator) unfolding

Dear Democratic Leaders: here’s a free idea, send members of congress into the buildings where Elons people are and see what they’re doing. Dare them to stop you. Do something

RONALD REAGAN (1988): We should be aware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag.

The stock market is tanking so badly it almost feels like we are being governed by someone who went bankrupt six tim— Oh wait.

As China continues to give money and projects to countries to gain influence, we are shutting down our agencies that do that. China is eating our lunch and Trump is the reason. Sorry folks, if you don’t see it you don’t understand how the world works. Period

Dear the Media, When something bad happens in an area under the executive branch's purview, and the White House goes "uh... a Black or gay person must've done it," you do not need to accept that. You're allowed to follow up in pursuit of the factual reason, not the bigoted excuse. Love, The public

It's bad, T. He's firin' all the Inspector Gadgets.

2025 has been my least favorite decade so far.

“I hate the corrupt slaveholding, women whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity.” ~ Frederick Douglass, 1845

Let’s hope Foxnews etc breathlessly cover these people being pardoned then committing crimes as much as they did immigrants who were released and committed crimes

as we’re seeing the endpoint of the anti-DEI hysteria is just opening the door to rampant employment discrimination

i think the executive orders directing agencies to end energy efficiency regulations and open up more land to drilling and mining is so indicative of the character of the american right — in its view everything, whether people or our larger environment, is something to be exploited and dominated

“Assume positive intent” is among the first principles of interpreting another’s behavior. But it’s mostly useful in absence of other evidence, not in spite of it. If someone’s (abhorrent) new behavior is exactly in keeping with their (abhorrent) old behavior, that’s just their character.

Whether it’s Obama, wearing a tan suit or Elon Musk doing Hitler salutes, both sides have engaged in incendiary behavior
