Vinay Prasad can't really think this? "Cutting indirects might even mean more science. Less money spent on the administration is more money to give out to actual scientists. I am shocked to see researchers crying about how much money the university gets— it means more grants can be given per cycle."

The Trump admin coalition destroying scientific research seems to include 3 distinct but overlapping groups: 1) Religious conservatives who see it as evil. 2) Social Darwinist tech billionaires who want to privatize and monopolize it. 3) MAGA cultists who just want to own the libs.

They are turning the NWS into a commercial data service, focused on commercial weather products, which they will sell to private companies like Accuweather, who will no longer have to compete with free government forecasts.

Is there a comprehensive overview anywhere that explores why they are so committed to destroying scientific research?

Moral of the story, maybe not ideal to drink a 12-pack of Diet Coke every day.

Just reached Phase 3 here! I'm 1,000 words over on my chapter about public opposition to cell-cultured meat and I'd hate to have to cut quotes like "Study: Bill Gates’ Lab Grown Meat Causes Cancer in Humans."

"We've been talking for a while and I can't tell, generally, what you're recommending." - The New Yorker's David Remnick, speaking to an absolutely incoherent John Fetterman. www.newyorker.com/podcast/the-...

Like most anti-democractic movements, anti-intellectualism is a defining feature of Trump's MAGA movement. By owning the libs in the short term, their attack on university research funding will reduce our nation's intelligence, economic power, innovation, creativity, and security in the long-term.

We have two job openings in the Media Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Non tenure-track, of interest for those who work in cultural studies or critical media, don't mind a full-time lecture schedule, and enjoy working with grad TAs. It's a three-year renewable post. Please circulate!

BREAKING: The Trump administration, cloaking itself in the mantle of concern for the "working class," has withdrawn federal approval for congestion pricing, cutting funding for billions of dollars in repairs to the NYC region's lifeblood transit system.

In a just world Eric Adams would be the worst politician alive. Unfortunately there's just way too much competition at the top. youtu.be/4hHBbjh-mWc?...

Seems like a great time to destroy our national climate research and environmental action infrastructure.

RFK Jr off to a great start standing idly by as Health and Human Services' childhood programs get gutted so he can concentrate on the important stuff like ranting about seed oils and antidepressants.

Despite the call here to understand regenerative agriculture as an "ongoing continuum," it's more often treated as a binary -- ag is either regenerative or not. That's a silly way to think about food production and distracts from what's most important -- OUTCOMES for people and the planet.

Couldn't be clearer that Democrats aren't a party in the way that Republicans are a party. The GOP has an ideological project. They build power to accomplish specific things. The project of the Democratic Party is getting Democrats reelected. 80-90+% of Congress is, so it doesn't take much effort.

I would say the RFK Jr news is making me sick but that would be an endorsement of the miasma theory of disease.

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

I am sincerely curious if I could hear from any food scholars/activists who still support Vandana Shiva. Are you unaware of the crackpot stuff? Aware but think it's not a big deal or an unfair characterization? She's literally out here reposting Alex Jones these days...

Here's foodie favorite Vandana Shiva stating that vaccines cause autism (sorry I'm linking to the bad place). x.com/stkirsch/sta...

I hate that I have to think about him every time I wake up again.

Elon looked at this list of government spending and started cutting from the bottom.

Governors and other leaders in red states need to step up. $2.5B in NIH funding to Texas alone, billions more across the country. And NIH is just one big funding agency, more cuts are coming. Universities are some of the largest state employers. ROI on research is immense. This needs to be stopped.
