The earth is just a massive ball of raw elements held together by gravity spinning round a star. Doesn’t actually need anything.

I’m so out of touch I didn’t even know that was “THE” Ariana Grande until after the movie, was impressed by both her singing, acting and comic timing though.

I remember mild disappointment that it meant we couldn’t freely migrate to the U.S. when I heard about it as a child, beyond that I’ve not thought about it a lot.

Feels like they’re just dancing to someone else’s tune by doing this

What’s impressive about that is I don’t think 2 of our front 3 have been in any sort of form over those 4 games where we’ve collected 10 points and we still don’t have a starting RW.

Ironically I think the guy in the photo was making the point that for the good of the Tory party she should be less active on social media and didn’t need to reactively respond to every point of view expressed by others.

Alright if you’re really this “omnipotent” God, where are my keys?
comment in response to post
Why didn’t you start your own political party 10 years ago and lead it to a famous election victory 7 years ago to stop the Tories gaining power again? Got to take some of the blame yourself really.

But then how do you get everyone to stop obeying the person in power at the same time. You’ll need someone to organise that and convince them all it’s a good idea. Someone with charisma. You know, a real leader of men for them to get behind…
comment in response to post
I’d say once the authoritarian has got power anyway the idea here is to publicly look like you’re offering outright obedience and doing what they’d want in advance. If you “look” obedient and supportive they’ll focus less on you and you have more private freedom to do what you want.

Can I still have a muffin if my response is after this secondary post?

Not sure why it’s an issue. At a guess I’d say that when people hear “you didn’t read it, you listened to it” they make the assumption that the person making the statement is implying that listening is somehow a lesser activity or doesn’t really count.

It’s one of those situations where new technology either requires a new word or an agreed change to the meaning of an old one. Feels wrong to say you’ve “read” a book when you’ve listened to it but there’s no other collective word to say you’ve consumed it through either method, so “read” is used.

Interesting to think at the start of A New Hope there are only 3 current or former members of the old Jedi remaining and Luke was the catalyst for all 3 of their deaths by the end of the trilogy.

Quite frankly I don’t trust the character of any person who didn’t make a joke at that point.

My approach to any new hardware or software can be summed up as “I wonder what would happen if I press this?”

The composure to do that after you’d already done that first bit of skill as well

I’m not really sure who Gregg Wallace is if I’m honest. Glad the governments focusing on the big issues though.

But you’re not going to develop immunity to E. coli if you just spend all your time swimming in the clean pool!

More annoyed than anything. “Will you shut up and give me a quest to go and kill something!”

I had spent most of the 2nd half watching Marcelino warming up thinking he’d allow us to win back control of the game. So I’d say there did look to be a way for us to prevail.

One of those 26 goals was the winner in a Champions League final though. So they couldn’t have been too bad a team.

Yeah, it humanises Scrooge, makes you understand why he’s become the way he is and the length of the scene shows how much space it still holds in his own memory. Makes no sense to not include it.

Doubt he has any idea what he meant by the statement and just said it because he thought that’s what voters wanted to hear.

The photo immediately reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where it turns out George takes his shirt off when he goes to the toilet.

There’s a joke to be told in this situation…but what?

Feels like we always lose 1-0 to them at home every time. So I’m just assuming that’ll happen again.

Yes. It’s a discussion about the meaning of a word and whether that needs to be changed in line with the creation of audiobooks. It’s then inevitably high jacked by an argument about the value of audiobooks with people assuming the discussion of the words meaning has a subtext criticism of it.

I’ve just kind of accepted Disney will provide us with a lot more Star Wars content but it’s rarely going to reach the heights of pre Disney Star Wars. Still nice to have some sci-fi based in that universe though.

Episode IX was a complete mess anyway.

Thank God, it’s been over 24 hours since the last one!

It’s with headphones on, so no one around me knows what I’m listening to

Whereas now it’s become almost impossible to avoid finding out how a film finishes before you’ve had a chance to watch it.

Depends on the song, I’ll happily listen to my favourite Christmas songs in July

Super Sunday should always finish with a fight night special where Roy Keane has a fight in the stadium car park with whatever fan has annoyed him this week.

Equally from my days of having to study dry subjects I had no interest in I can confirm it’s definitely possible to read an entire page of a book before realising your mind was thinking about what you wanted for dinner and absorbing none of it.

Basically provoked him by telling him he’s good at the role he’s currently working in.

You are right on that point. I feel like we then need a new word that specifically means the traditional form of reading though. Mainly from an early years education standpoint you need to differentiate between a child being able to read a book and read / listen to an audio book.
comment in response to post
Reading doesn’t even have to do with reading?

Fascinating watching the arguments branch off in random, quite unpredictable directions though.

No reason to be worried. It’s great.

Self-assured, peaceful people are harder to sell stuff to by tricking them into thinking they’re incomplete without the product you want to sell them. That’s bad for “the economy” and quite frankly unpatriotic as a result.
comment in response to post
That’s all that’s happening we’ve these posts. People are pointing out that reading isn’t the right word to describe consuming literature by listening to it being read by someone else and then people are assuming they’re trying to say they haven’t consumed the text. It’s mainly just semantics.

Shame the Brazil and Las Vegas GPs weren’t the other way round really. That would have been a spectacular way to round off a championship winning season.

Yeah, that’s essentially why I left Twitter and came here. The comment section of every popular post was just full of endless drivel by people / bots who’d paid money to say nothing.
comment in response to post
Yeah, it’s interesting that there does seem to be some kind of underlying assumption people are making that the action of listening is somehow less valuable and more passive than reading But I can stick the subtitles on an episode of The Office and read them, doesn’t make it an intellectual pursuit
