Since Trump was elected in 2016 I have been telling people that NATO, or at least a NATO that relies upon USA weapons and support, was dead. And plenty of otherwise competent people still don't get it. Sucks to be Cassandra.

Two issues with this: first, Trump is transactional, so Europe will have to offer something (many things) to get an OK. Second, Trump always reneges... so any plan where Europe relies on US capabilities is flawed. Bottom line is: Europe needs to act and plan as if it has no US support now.

How long until US Americans have to quarantine before entering the EU?

Given Trump's actions and stated views, isn't NATO basically dead? Trump's America is more likely to attack a NATO member than to honour an Article 5 invocation. So all NATO planning that assumes participation of US forces is obsolete. Does Rutte understand this? Does Ukraine?

Does Rutte know that NATO is dead? And therefore so is his position. Kaja Kallas is looking smarter by the day.

The time to bring things to a head is BEFORE the autocrat has consolidated his hold on the military. I.e., now, not in 6 months time. One of the many things that the 10 quisling Democratic senators don't get.

I trust Daily Kos will be leading the effort to get good candidates in to primary them all.

There is never a good time to say no to terrorists... but if you say yes, they will just terrorise you further. Better a terrible end than endless terror.
