Reputed son that is of the lover brother not of the woman 😹

Feel for you - my ancestor is the "reputed son" of a woman whose husband deserted her and she shacked up with his brother and bore him several children Looks like either they had a falling out or the parish officials were overzealous as she was "removed" to another parish to give birth #genealogy

Yes I was so lucky to get the vaccine (jab not sugar lump) and because of my cousin's death from diptheria Mum was very keen to get us all vaccinated against that, whooping cough and tetanus (Dpt) I remember visits to the child health clinic for free NHS orange/rosehip syrup for vit C #genealogy

All that stuff about Chartism, Catholic Emancipation, the Irish Question, Repeal of the Corn Laws etc etc is now extremely useful - shame school was so many years ago and I can't remember any of it 😹 #genealogy

I remember the dismantling of mobile chest x-ray service as TB had been beaten, the announcement of the last smallpox case in the world, the development of the MMR vaccine, the use of new wonder drugs - antibiotics, of spending weeks in bed with scarlet fever, measles, mumps and chickenpox #GenHour

Not just the 19th century but in my generation - my cousin lost aged 3 to diptheria, the neighbour whose measles led to meningitis and permanent brain damage, schoolmates wearing leg calipers due to polio, stories from friends about catching polio and lengthy stays in isolation hospitals #genealogy

As the WW2 generation has mostly died off now boomers - the "4 minute warning" and aftermath of war bombsite generation - may be the ones who really appreciate what war means. After all we were the ones who were peaceniks all those years ago 😹 and yes I agree about that inappropriate image

From what I remember of school over 50 years ago I think boys maybe always were. I remember my brothers were 25 before they became "normal" again after puberty. 😹

Yes and having attended one in the last few years I can tell you that you all have to sign then wait around afterwards while it is copied out for the bride and groom #genealogy #SocietyofFriends

We are so spoiled in #genealogy to have access to great speakers across a very wide spectrum. #Rootstech I've been reviewing an online training course that my daughter was very critical of but that others thought was OK. I totally agree with her criticisms and in fact was even more scathing 😹

Losing digital copies of photos from now deceased relatives is also a worry

We have now lost all but one of my parents' generation and because of my family history interest I was able to get the photos etc from my in-laws but storing them just as I am beginning to think about downsizing is a bit of an issue and will continue to be as parents live into their 90s #genealogy

2/ The books were acquired as part of my pro genie life hence not counting those My digitised #photos now all need to be redone with better software and resolution and I am thankful that I still have the originals as some of my digital folders have apparently not backed up -lost when my laptop died

Are we also talking about the photo albums, VHS videos and Super8 cine film I have inherited in the last few years? #GenHour #GenHour #genealogy Apart from that my physical files are in binders -about a tall bookcase of those - my books I am not counting but again a largish bookcase with overflow

So I think they would have gone mostly by rail in the 1890s depending on their eventual destination and the cost

I found it fascinating to discover for a client a few years ago that in 1830 his ancestor from England would have travelled by boat from Albany, New York to Detroit along the newly built Erie Canal #genealogy

Or even a Tudor part-time spy 😹 my "Grocer" was a merchant who dealt in all kinds of goods and was imprisoned in Antwerp as a suspected spy #genealogy

The #Railway spawned a host of new occupations and contributed to geographical mobility. My watermen became railwaymen but others I have traced turned from #canals to carts/lorries servicing the railway goods industry #genealogy #socialhistory

And in the UK 1841 census and beyond the emergence and building of the railways was shown by the new occupations of #Railway Labourers and Navvies and if you are lucky you will find them clustered in camps #genealogy

Or the emergence of "Pensioner" as occupation in the UK 1911 census as a result of the introduction of the State Pension in 1908 where previously it tended to mean an army or navy pensioner and you knew to look for service records. #genchat #genealogy

And now I've inherited photo albums from my in-laws so I'm concentrating on C20th and photos and my memories to supplement the bare documentation before it is too late I think I have about another 25 years of #genealogy research still to do 😹

I struggle with putting my own tree out there because I don't feel I have researched it fully yet even after 20 odd years Some ancestors are really well fleshed out (and I turned them into talks) but others not Online newspapers and parish registers are making a real difference #genealogy

And it all gets too depressing #genealogy especially when one of the quoted sources the Dictionary of National Biography online at Ancestry I know from my own research and that of academics to be inaccurate
comment in response to

And out of the first 10 trees I have looked at 8 contain factual errors even the ones with more than 5 sources and that is for his own entry and family members! #genealogy I think many have been copied from other trees surprise surprise 😹

And now I just have to see who is in all those 549 trees and what other lines there are! #genealogy

Agree with you in general but...
Just tried that one out with Ancestry 549 hits in public trees for my 13xGGF born c1509 but to be fair he is very well documented (being the father of an Elizabethan poet) and this is the UK #genealogy

A bit like getting arrested to get a bed for the night really and if the gaol was really small or full at the time? Would be interesting to see if they came up subsequently in the Quarter Sessions. Not suggesting you look obviously - just an idle thought #genealogy

Many thanks Jaap #GenHour I remember learning to use a fairly simple adding machine in the early 80s as a temporary clerk in a bread factory
